President Maithripala Sirisena said today he did not condone the attack on Sirasa TV on the day of the no-confidence motion.

He told media heads that such incidents including those of harming journalists or media institutions were against the principle of media freedom.

“Be it Sirasa or any other media organization, we as a government upholding media freedom do not condone violence. We experienced how the previous Rajapaksa government led an arson attack on Sirasa,” the President said.

The President was referring to the incident which took place on Wednesday night after the results of the no-confidence motion were announced where a mob had surrounded the Sirisa TV building in Braybrooke Place shouting slogans and lighting fire crackers. Fearing violence, the Sirisa TV management had informed the Police who had arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd. (Kelum Bandara)

Yes, media freedom is bread and butter for a healthy democracy. I have been watching this channel and that they too need be free and independent. They are not. They proclaimed themselves as bond experts. Letter I happened to realize these so called experts knew very little of the bond issue and the legal process. They are working on a addenda which we all should know.

Good comment. It was plain to see that Sirasa had an ax to grind with Ranil thereby showing that they were a biased media and they went overboard burning their fingers in the process. Sirasa nam apita nevei!!!

The continuous low class sinister media programs were conducted by "Sirasa" through out local government elections campaign and soon after to attack Prime Minister. Sirasa must be closed forever.

President has not learnt his lesson, once again he is playing politics. There was no attack on Sirasa, they only made noise and lit crackers, this is not an attack. Sri Lankans always celebrated victory this way. When he was elected this was the same case, he did not make any comments then. He is still playing politics without governing.

Sirasa sponsored no confidence motion was defeated by 46 votes.

    Mevan Friday, 06 April 2018 08:37 PM

Well said Mr President. However media organisations too should know their limits.

    Massdeen Friday, 06 April 2018 08:37 PM

Mr President can you be silent without trying to be ignorant, if not step down and hand over the Presidency to PM

    Raza Friday, 06 April 2018 08:56 PM

Government should protect Media Institutions. Sirasa is not a Media institution or people claiming to be journalists in Sirasa are not journalists. Sirasa is a Mafia itself and their journalists are paid hitmen. People now understand why Sirasa was burnt number of times in the past.

    Reviewcric Friday, 06 April 2018 08:57 PM

Oh please... you just gave an illegal tender worth billions to sirasa and they are sucking up to you left right and centre. Sirasa is not even worthy to be a news outlet. They are lucky that they were only met with crackers and not rocks for their pathetic biased anti Ranil coverage.

    Yeti Saturday, 07 April 2018 08:03 AM

    AMEN!!!

    Gratiaen. Friday, 06 April 2018 09:00 PM

Must go into this matter and find out what made them behave in that manner just opposite only Sirasa building.

Freddie Perera Friday, 06 April 2018 09:02 PM

Oh this is no big deal only fire crackers were lit. There was no attack as such.

    Man Saturday, 07 April 2018 08:50 AM

If not for the Police or Ranil the President they wanted to attack.

    Gobba Friday, 06 April 2018 09:09 PM

Took more than 24 hours to comment on Digana violence, but super fast to comment on a mere fire cracker incident outside his friends media office !!! What a great President we have inherited.

    Sincere Friday, 06 April 2018 09:44 PM

Is he talking about the firing of crackers or the previous one during his previous regime?

    Tinkiriya Friday, 06 April 2018 10:39 PM

...but the MARRU SIRRA condones attack on a certain minority. even tamper with justice to bring prosecute servicemen who engage in violence .

    Dee Friday, 06 April 2018 10:40 PM

We lit crackers outside a SLPP big shots house. No one saw that as an 'attack' . Just don't provoke people!

    dulan Saturday, 07 April 2018 08:02 AM

There should be guidelines regarding news broadcasts as Sirisa spend 20 mts of the news on their own show!

    Man Saturday, 07 April 2018 08:52 AM

If not for Sirasa and the brave Election Commissioner, this government would have not come into power.

    TONY Saturday, 07 April 2018 09:04 AM

IF THE MEDIA REPORT IS NON BIAS THEN THEY SHOULD NOT BE ATTACKED. BUT IF THEY TAKE SIDES THEY HAVE TO EXPECT SOME REPERCUSSIONS

    Dee Saturday, 07 April 2018 05:48 PM

There were vehicles which caught fire when crackers were lit in Polonnaruwa in 2015. Belonging to a company. Was that not an 'attack'?

    Upul Saturday, 07 April 2018 05:51 PM
