The University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC) today said that the work stoppage by the non-academic staff of state universities would continue in the absence of a positive response from the authorities regarding their demands.
As a result 15 State universities and other institutions under the University Grants Commission (UGC) are at a standstill for the fifteenth day as at yesterday.
UTUJC Chairman Edward Malwattage said they had launched this work stoppage over six demands relating to their employment, which they had proposed one and half year ago, including a salary hike.
“Although the work stoppage which began on February 28, was continuing for the fifteenth day the entire higher education system is facing a serious problem. The authorities have failed to provide us with a solution,” he said.
Mr. Malwattage said they had decided not to engage in any maintenance or repairs of emergency breakdowns of water and electricity supplies at the universities from yesterday.
He said discussions were continuing with student unions attached to the State universities with a view to supporting the work stoppage carried out by the non-academic staff. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

All the demands cannot be provided for the sake of votes. That is the worst thing in this Country over the period of time.

Close all the local Universities. Give all those students Government soft loan scheme to start degree studies in Private universities. This is a utter waste of time and students are just wasting their valuable time.

The curse of the nation is the government servants. They never have the commitment to work but only there for a salary. Even they work, not work or strike they will get a salary at the end of the month. The ministry of health is for ever on strike by either the doctors, nurses or minor staff. The universities are most of the year closed due to either the students are protesting on the roads, the academics are protesting for a salary hike or the non academics are on strike. So how can our country progress? Just count 12 months backwards and see how many days all these government servants work. They are worse than the corrupt politicians

They will stop the strike on the 23rd, come for work on the 24th and get their salaries paid on 25th. How do they do it so fast. Because they have prepared the salary sheets for this month before they went on strike (probably getting special overtime for that). They will agree to consider all demands later and stop the strike provided they get the one demand, no victimization which means payment of salaries for strike period. This happened every year for several years about ten years ago, until one UGC Chair refused to allow salaries being paid. Then the one month paid holiday strike stopped for about 8 years and is now starting again.
