Two Police constables attached to the Negombo Police station were killed in a head-on collision of a motorcycle and a motor car at South Pitipana, Negombo on the Negombo-Pamunugama Road last night.
Police said the car on its way to Negombo had collided with the motorcycle heading towards Pamunugama.
The victims, Saminda Shanika Bandara (32) and Ashoka Lalith Yasanayaka (39) were identified as residents of Dankotuwa and Anamaduwa. They succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to the Negambo Hospital.
The driver of the car was taken into custody. Investigations revealed that he was driving under the influence of liquor at the time of accident.

RIP.It's high time that SL police place their personnel on 24 hrs duty. I've observed that where ever the traffic police is controlling the traffic flow is somewhat smoother. I.e at the signals and at vehicles entering the main road from inner lanes.Then cases like drink driving must be treated very seriously. 24 x7 operation will also bring in good govt revenue too.Start fining motorists who are entering the yellow box at all signals when the path is not cleared. However, mark them first and have an awareness campaigns. Fine all vehicles blocking the main lanes at the signal intersections. I.e. most of the motorists block half the lane at right turns at the signal lights. Specifically the 3 wheelers and motor cycles.All purpose is lost if the traffic police start a campaign and make it ineffective after a short period. YOU MUST HIT WHERE IT HURTS!Good luck!
