While claiming that the President had not issued any statement mentioning the stance of the government on South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM), the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) said that they would launch trade union actions in near future.

Addressing the media, member of the Media Committee of the GMOA Dr. Prasad Colombage said that the Attorney-General's Department (AG's Dept.) had turned a blind eye to command the government to announce its stance on SAITM and adding the political elements had mislead both the AG's department and the government to come out with reasonable solutions over the issue.

Meanwhile, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge stressed the government was deliberately delaying to issue the stance on SAITM by virtue of the whims and fancies of some politicians and responsible officials.

“We have almost come to the edge of this struggle to insist the government to abolish SAITM. But, we have not lost our grip and therefore, we are prepared to launch protest marches and vehicle parades followed by massive island wide trade union actions in near future,” he warned. You can take trade union action only on matters affecting your profession directly, and not on government policies. DM please send all the comments the readers have been publishing on this subject of SAITM and GMOA on many occasions in the past. It shows that vast majority of the public is against the stance of the GMOA on the SAITM, but not meaning that they support all activities of the Government.

    BUSHEL Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:17 AM

WHY NOT SUPPORT ALL ACTIVITIES OF GOVERNMENT?

    Patient Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:20 AM

Anyway, we will also take stern action!!!!

    Ram Wednesday, 30 August 2017 03:02 AM

Government stance is well known and the private medical education will go on. How ever much you try GMOA are a failed lot on this issue. The final nail on the coffin will come from the Supreme Court after they hear all stake holders. Make your submissions to SC and wait for the court order. The public are agitated now and GMOA will soon receive good medicine from the public if the patients are not attanded at the Hospitals.

    BUSHEL Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:25 AM

GOVERNMENT STANCE IS WELL KNOWN FOR CORUPTION. RHE BIGEST SCAM IS ALREADY CAUGHT RED HANDED BUT STILL PAMPERING.

Yesterday, these pinheads claimed that the President has a solution to meet their unjust demands and everything was fine. They expected the ruling from an announcement from the President yesterday and the yesterday came and went. Ha Ha Ha! Get out your stupid huts and do not waste public money.

    citizen Wednesday, 30 August 2017 05:53 AM

GMOA is in courts awaiting verdict. It is illegal for GMOA to take TU action. Don't press the govt. hand of law

    BUSHEL Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:28 AM

    John Wednesday, 30 August 2017 10:38 AM

...and visit you as a private patient, to add to your income?!

    Rexy Wednesday, 30 August 2017 06:52 AM

We could boast about providing free health services to public while mourning at the same time for having ruthless health professionals who strike work to fulfill their egoistic demands

    ILLOGICAL Wednesday, 30 August 2017 06:55 AM

There utterances are (a ")come out with reasonable solutions over the issue." AND (b) " struggle to insist the government to abolish SAITM. " = These are diametrically opposite views on the issue. No doubt they have " almost come to the edge of this struggle " . AND now there is little doubt they need treatment in Psychiatric hospitals,( also known as mental hospitals),

    Duminda Wednesday, 30 August 2017 07:00 AM

Hello Mr.Haritha learn to keep respect of your profession. You'll look like a bunch of thugs. Need the right leader to teach you'll a life long lesson once

FINAL FALL Wednesday, 30 August 2017 07:04 AM

    STERN ACTION ! ! Wednesday, 30 August 2017 07:12 AM

" the government was deliberately delaying to issue .. ". A day or two ago you pointed your guns directly at the President . Good -you have come down a peg or two - on your "stern action" type of authoritative talk.

    AjithZ Wednesday, 30 August 2017 07:21 AM

Go ahead and take your actions. Don't be surprised if poor people also take counter actions this time. Be prepared.

    AMAZING Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:14 AM

Can't someone or everyone teach these third rate rowdies a lesson they will never forget?! I honestly feel sorry for the good doctors in our country. Going on strike is violating the basic right to health care of the suffering masses.

well wisher Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:20 AM

    marmaduke Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:23 AM

Can't somebody file a fundamental rights case against the GMOA and the rest ? If I had the money and legal resources ,I would! The fishermen have joined the protest near the fort station! Does that mean they want to enter medical college too?! or are they already in the medical faculty?!

    SW Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:36 PM

Why not you put into action what you suggested?

    Perumal Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:27 AM

Government must import Indian nad Chinese Doctors. That would lead to a transformation of attitudes to the better and improvement of technology.

    dulan Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:36 AM

So u still have some JO money left to do protests?

    sujata Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:40 AM

Arjuna Ranatunga-what kind of behavior you would call this? certainly doctors in India do not behave like these thugs

    Shelton W Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:49 AM

The action of the GMOA and some Med school professors shows the basis of admittance to our Universities is a failure. Apart froma few deserving sudents it seems a whole lot of hooligans get in. Where in the world will medical students keep away from lectures for months on end. Do they expect to become Doctors withour attending lectures ? The performance of the Uni Med Professors is pathertic. Instead of leading they seem to be led by the student hooligans.IN 1998 a U.K.Labour Govt introduced the charging of fees for University courses. There were no street protests. If we want to solve the unacceptable nonsense in Universiities start levying fees. Even the UK has allowed a Private medical school in 2016. Where is the clinical training in a NHS Hospital. Our selfish GMOA wants to eat the cake and have it also. I hope the Govt will stand firm and put these twirps in their proper place.

Students to be expelled Wednesday, 30 August 2017 02:33 PM

Make medical college lecturers an esstential service. Then - notice all students that whodo not ttend lectures as deemed to have given up their studies and considered as left the university.

    Fernando Wednesday, 30 August 2017 08:51 AM

You cannot put pressure on the government decisions.People in this country has elected a President and a Prime Minister. If they are not happy they will send them home after 2 years..Take what ever action. There is counter action too available.

First and foremost is to remove these vile people from their so called medical profession. They study and live on taxpayers money and are jealous to see others joining this noble profession. Cancel their licences and import foreign doctors who will gladly come from India, Cuba and any place else. Teach them a lesson so that no one else will ever think of putting the innocent masses to suffer. Accidents do happen!!!

    Lumbini Wednesday, 30 August 2017 09:55 AM

I think it's time for these pathetic GMOA clan to shut the @

    BV Wednesday, 30 August 2017 10:11 AM

Totally agree. The GMOA seems to have come to the very edge of the grave they have dug for themselves.Only last rights to be performed.

    Edriana Wednesday, 30 August 2017 10:14 AM

Why not get the Indian and Chinese politicians to run the country.Neville Fernando

    Mano Wednesday, 30 August 2017 11:58 AM

Please Mr President, your verdict should support the SAITM. You can see from these comments how people feel about these hooligans. We need SAITM doctors to come out to save the country from the pathetic doctors.

    Blair Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:07 PM

You are ruining the education of medical students by forcing them to boycott lectures. Who is winning and who is loosing.

    IK Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:08 PM

As you read the comments here it is clear that all the comments for each and every news item are being posted by same limited number of readers. The comments are boring and most of them are written in shockingly horrible English.

    IK Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:32 PM

It is clear that almost all the comments appearing in the papers are always from the very same people. It is boring and most of them have been written in shockingly wrong/broken English.

    DD Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:40 PM

How nice, so many people to rule this country making so many suggestions through this column of the DM?Funny people!

    Abey Wednesday, 30 August 2017 01:02 PM

Unfortunately, Rajitha is the only one talking of the truth about Private education. Govt is in total failure in getting the masses to support them in their policies. eg SAITM.We allow private education in all sectors. What is special about Medical colleges. All GMOA members go to US, UK etc and obtain Post- grad degrees from Private /non Govt universities. Why double standard?

    Chinta Wednesday, 30 August 2017 01:24 PM

Main strength of the' Against SAITM ' is, power of GMOA ,but to various reasons they didn't show their strength but stern warnings only, instead, Medical students should see this is not the time to react. Ranil Batalanda or PRRA ragitha won't do anything favorable to you.

    RT Wednesday, 30 August 2017 02:12 PM

This is nothing short of pathetic. Here are a bunch of life savers behaving worse than the industrial age workers and holding the innocents to ransom. Damn shame on you! It is the innocent rural masses who suffer. These are the masses who funded your free education. The biggest problem is the selection process. Imagine a fellow getting 190 marks from one so called 'disadvantaged' district getting into the medical faculty and someone from 'advantaged' district getting 270 marks and missing out. A big joke! Private Medical Institution is a MUST for that country. If you are concerned about your professional standards then objectively work with the regulators to improve it rather than fighting to abolish it. Your disgraceful behaviour is nothing but to protect your fiefdom. Public and vast majority of decent doctors should rally against this nonsense. Your passive inaction is silently condoning GMOA selfish actions.

    ceylon Wednesday, 30 August 2017 02:44 PM

these strikes are punishing people who done only helped them to become doctors.frm these all strikes not any one frm government dusturbed. via DM Android App

    Gandhi Thursday, 31 August 2017 08:32 AM

When go through these comments it clear public conscience swings against the GMOA, be wise before take your next step, best option is pull back for some times.Don't use medical students like baby brigade of LTTE with cyanide capsule around the neck or and suicide jackets wearing cadres with remote in your hand.

Make health care delivery systems an essential service. If any segment resorts to strike action, sack the lot and confiscate their property!!
