Three spill gates of the Udawalawa Reservoir were opened today owing to the heavy showers experienced in catchment areas, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.

The DMC requested people living in the downstream to be vigilant of rising water levels.

Speaking to Daily Mirror , DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili said the showers experienced in and around the catchment areas were reportedly reducing.

However, he said more spill gates would be opened if the rainfalls continue.

Meanwhile, one spill gate of Kukule Ganga Reservoir had also been opened today due to rising water levels. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Oh My God, another one. The end result would be a dry wewa soon after the rains stop. These tanks are only spilling the water to waste.

Few months from now, we will be facing 'severe' drought, power crises, because today we are still depending on the infrastructure built 40-50 years ago, which isn't sufficient to keep up with current needs. Apart from starting a war among ourselves, and then winning it, what have our governments done in the past 5 decades?

All this wasted water is urgent needed in the future. It is a very bad water-management that there are not enough storage facilities. Per example underground caves like in other countries.
