The chief incumbent of the International Meditation Centre at Rathmalkanda Aranyaya (hermitage) in Kitthalella, Bandarawela Ven. Madawala Upali Thera has received the patent license for his invention of solar-power operated motor vehicle.

A unique feature of this vehicle is that there is no emission of carbon dioxide and sulpher dioxide to the environment, thereby helping to minimise air pollution and reduce global warming, according to the thera.

This vehicle will be helpful to persons who have difficulty in walking as well as those who are looking for a cost efficient mode of transport that can get them from A to B. The vehicle, with a maximum speed of 30 kmph, can accommodate two passengers.

Before entering the Buddhist order the thera was a science teacher and while he is unlikely to abandon the order and leave the priesthood, he enjoys experimenting. (Palitha Ariyawansa)

Very refreshing indeed. We associate Buddhist priests with knowledge, since that is what they should represent. All praise and compliments to this priest for demonstrating how well ptiests can serve their society.

Mature people with world experience like this priest should be encouraged to become priests instead of recruiting kids to enter the priesthood.

A refreshing change. A far cry from the monks who engage in politics and bring Buddhism to disrepute.

Excellent . I am a Catholic. This is an example to our nation, our mother country. Those who invent new innovative things, will be taken its advantage by foreign countries to develop a SOLAR CAR without CO2 and SO2. I do not know, why our Prez and PM do not get its advantage by having a agreement with a foreign country to build cars, iphones, tabs ect. in Sri Lanka (FDI-Foreign Direct Investment)

Every Sri Lankan will salute this selfless effort regardless of race, religion or language. The Government should help to get patent rights, explore possibilities to develop as priority. Sadly though, the minister supposed to be taking care of this type scientific discoveries is mired in dirty politics to serve His master. May be he is deaf, dumb and Blind in this matter.
