Strict rules will be implemented to ensure that bus drivers and conductors provide a quality transport service to the commuters, National Transport Commission (NTC) said today.

NTC Chairman M.A.P. Hemachandra told Daily Mirror they were thinking of banning the semi-luxury bus service and converting them to a luxury bus service and were seeking legal advice prior to undertaking such a move.

He said the facilities provided by the semi-luxury buses were not in satisfactory when compared with the bus fares and most of them were overcrowded.

“It is similar on highway routes. We have authorised the highway traffic police to enforce the law against the bus owners,” Mr. Hemachandra said.

He said the NTC Mobile Inspection Unit is vigilant on overcrowding in luxury buses and suspend route permits of such buses.

When questioned on the bus mafia and the recent violence by bus drivers and conductors, Mr. Hemachandra said few incidents were reported and bus owners summoned and warned.

However were solved after they were summoned to the NTC with the bus owners and advised. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

In SriLanka it is difficult to run a Luxury Bus Service because the private bus owners wanted to get the maximum crowd with poor comforts to the commuters.

Semi-Luxury buses charge double the normal rate, but over-load the bus, No. TV or even a Radio, torn seats re-adjusted very closely. Absurd.... CTB buses are 1000 times better.

Better implement this first with CTB buses, it won't work with Private buses let them run the buses as usual like sardine cans.

I propose, the OWNER of the Bus should be fined heavily for any Laws broken by the bus drivers and conductors...

These people should travel by bus, they will soon learn the reality.

We travel in private buses because no choice; we see enough indiscipline and come across more than enough problems. This is the fact of the matter.

ban all privately owned busses and appoint 1 private company to operate countrys bus service. by doing so proper standards and discipline can be maintained and the authorities will have a better control over the bus transport sector. via DM Android App

Rules, laws, regulations blah, blah, blah. Same old buses, same old treatment to the passengers. "most of them were overcrowded". Mr NTC chairman, all of them are overcrowded.

The only difference between a semi-luxury and normal bus service is that semi-luxury has unwashed curtain across the window to prevent direct sun. But even some normal service buses have curtains. So please scrap semi-luxury service.

Why not teach them how to drive first?
