Several complaints have been received by the Colombo Municipality that stray dogs have invaded several public institutions including some leading schools and hospitals and is a nuisance and a danger to visitors, CMC Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr. I.V.P. Dharmawardane said yesterday.
He said the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, the Colombo National Hospital, the Castle Street Hospital, Elders Homes and leading schools such as Ananda, Nalanda, Gothami, Isipathana and railway stations and ports were among the institutions faced with this threat.
Dr. Dharmawardena said according to a recent census in September last year some 2,500 stray dogs were found in Colombo but however, there had been no reports of rabies from dog bites this year.
He said steps had been taken to sterilize female dogs as solution to breeding. (Indika Sri Aravinda)

Freddy Yong Friday, 26 October 2018 03:08 PM

saman Friday, 26 October 2018 08:32 AM
Stray dogs need to be shot onsite including the two legged variety!
Jaliya Friday, 26 October 2018 03:23 PM

Another hoodwinking programme by government institutions to cover up thier massive wastages, inefficiency and total disregard to help the public and lay the blame squarely on the innocent animals.....what a country we live in.
saman Friday, 26 October 2018 08:49 AM
The Vets forgot to sterilize and vaccinate the biggest stray dogs in the health sector Padeniya, Haritha and Naveen. Now they have rabies and biting the public at all given opportunities.
LEO Friday, 26 October 2018 10:04 AM
CMC must take fast steps to eradicate this problem. They should seek advice from the qualified experts and find a way to get rid of them. shoot or gas ....
Sanju Friday, 26 October 2018 10:14 AM
Stray dogs invade all the places in Colombo not only hospitals and schools. Also, we cannot drive the vehicles on road due to stray dogs. This is an issue around the country not only Colombo. Responsible people do something for this ASAP otherwise it will be another major issue of the country.
sampath Friday, 26 October 2018 03:49 PM
True Stray dogs are every where and its going to be a big issue. specially in Sri Lankan Parliament
sam Friday, 26 October 2018 10:26 AM
Firstly Stray dogs invaded parliament
Thush Friday, 26 October 2018 10:41 AM
The answer is sterilization. There should be a municipal council level sterilization programmes carried out if they need to control this in a human manner. although the vet association of Sri Lanka does a voluntary job , with no support of an allocated budget the reach obviously is limited.
Smart guru Friday, 26 October 2018 10:53 AM
Make sure you don’t kill the dogs. Something other solution more ethical.
Dayawathie Friday, 26 October 2018 10:57 AM
Otara, where are you ?.
Sammy Friday, 26 October 2018 11:04 AM
Where are the Animal Rights activists? This cannot be allowed to muliply. If Govt. does not take action, the people will and this will not be a good sight.
Sharon Friday, 26 October 2018 11:54 AM
Even at Temple trees and President's house???
Samson Friday, 26 October 2018 11:55 AM
Kotte municipality has also to take action regarding the problem in that area.
priyatharshan Friday, 26 October 2018 12:14 PM

Unchikun Friday, 26 October 2018 12:51 PM
Simple solution, give the contract to the Sri Lanka Railway and the problem will be solved in one night. If the tackle the elephants this is simple.
D.E.M. Ocracy Friday, 26 October 2018 02:02 PM
What about the TWO LEGGED ones in the JO in Parliament
JIM Friday, 26 October 2018 02:35 PM
The country has gone to the dogs.
Chris Friday, 26 October 2018 02:56 PM
It's all about cats and dogs now. First cats have invaded the President's house now dogs in public places!!
Dimitri Jayathunga. Friday, 26 October 2018 02:59 PM
Otara, where are U when the dogs need you the most.
Animal Lover Friday, 26 October 2018 04:38 PM
This is not Otaras problem. She just stuck her neck out to help the helpless. People need to sterilize their dogs and stop dumping the animals when they grow out of the 'cute' stage
fareed Friday, 26 October 2018 03:05 PM
Who says that they are street dogs, they are our street pets that also include cats, rats, cockroaches, mosquito, crows and other creatures which spread diseases. We love these creatures and let them live and we live with them.
k.soysa Friday, 26 October 2018 04:52 PM
It is our ridiculous attitudes. There are monkeys making havoc on plantations and tourist resorts, now wild pigs are ruining farms, cultivations and home plots and now, stray dogs!! May as well hand over the nation to these wild creatures and join the caravan from South America wanting to enter the U.S.
DPerera Friday, 26 October 2018 05:00 PM
In Australia and Thailand some university vet students are performing sterilization of stray dogs as a learning and charity activity. We should also implement such a program without delay!
Patriot Friday, 26 October 2018 05:01 PM
I am thinking why female dogs only are sterilised. Isn't it more efficient if both types are sterilised?
kumar Friday, 26 October 2018 05:50 PM
2500 stray dogs is a minor problem which can easily solved by CMC. round them up, sterelize them. locate them, waste food could be easily channeled. Savings with less costs. The population will dwindle.
Sambo Friday, 26 October 2018 07:20 PM
We have a few stray dogs in parliament as well. May be they came looking for them.
Ra Friday, 26 October 2018 07:42 PM
It is interesting. Only a few days back it was reported that stray cats have taken the Presidents’s house. Now the stray dogs are taking and invading the publics institutions in Colombo. So, where are ee heading on to?. The government should think carefully and attend to this problem at the national level.
Victor Saturday, 27 October 2018 12:14 PM

Victor Saturday, 27 October 2018 12:13 PM
