Social media blocked: TRCSL

Social media platforms including Facebook and phone messaging applications such as WhatsApp had been blocked as requested by the Defence Ministry to prevent transmitting fake news or rumours that instill a fear psychosis or a threat to communal harmony,the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) said.

The Media Unit of the TRCSL told Daily Mirror that users across the country would experience a drastic drop in speed or interruptions when accessing the internet. (Thilanka Kanakartahna)

Blocking the access to social media is againts the fundamental rights. We have the rights to know and share information. If the information is found misleading the law enforcement could take nessesary action.

even one day is too long. But we are at the mercy of someone who still lives in the stone age and has no idea what he is doing. Blocking all social media causes more unrest, Besides, fake news is leaking to, for what i know, The netherlands. In the news it is said that all off Sri lanka is on fire. All because tourist can not get in touch with their family and friends.

https://plus.google.com/ is still accessible. It looks like a ban to facebook, viber and whats up to promote google's social media while blocking other social media sites. People are blindly believing google. What ever the rubbish in the google maps also accepted in the schlorship exams.

i think it's good think to ban social media for some period of time.people are believer in rumour and they make an unnecessary terror while the other.gov should find the long prevailing cause for this.
