Tourists have been forced to use the jungle to answer calls of nature as the washrooms at Sigiriya heritage site are have been closed for repair.
Authorities were forced to close the facility after the septic tanks in the washrooms overflowed.
An employee stationed at the washroom, at the complex located near the tourists' vehicle car park at Sigiriya Moragamula, has been directing foreigners to the jungle area nearby for their needs.
Several disgruntled tourists offended by the lack of this basic facility have been inquiring as to whether they were in India.
Several issues also arose when some men were forced to use the ladies bathroom. (K K Ariyadasa)

You are right. I visited Sigiriya in 2009 and was charge Rs.2400 whilst my Sri Lankan friends only paid Rs.40. This form ofrip offs give Sri Lanka a bad name.

Have you been to neighbour India's site like the Taj Mahal and even ordinal sites in New Delhi? (Even with my Sri Lankan passport, I had to pay the Western price.)

All tourists coming to Sigiriya should be permitted to sit anywhere and shit!

At least responsible government officials in that area should maintain few porter loo (Portable Toilets) for the convenience of the public instead directing them to relieve themselves in the forest. This is a danger to environment and to wild life, which could lead to an outbreak of disease.

Although exorbitant charges are made from these tourists for visiting archaeological sites, very little attention is paid for their basic comfort, even at a price. As for these toilets that are so dilapidated, may I suggest that they, too, be named as archaeological sites so that we may charge some more money from the tourists for visiting these?

Two leaders and the 100 odd ministers should take the responsibility for not being able to provide the public with even the basic facilities thus bringing the country to this pathetic, abysmal state.
Nimali Friday, 24 February 2017 12:46 PM
Why doesn't the Govt. build some modern toilets? This Yahapalanaya Govt. has done nothing but talk since Jan. 2015.

This is very poor show. I have noted that when it comes to toilets we Sri Lankans are far behind compared to European nations. This country always liked the fragrance of it. It is high time we think seriously about public loos.
