Shooting incident in Pt. Pedro: IGP sends SIU unit to investigate

IGP Pujith Jayasundara had ordered a Special Investigation Unit (SIU) led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to be sent to Jaffna from Police Headquarters, Colombo to investigate the shooting incident that took place in the Point Pedro area, where a person was shot dead and two others escaped, Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Speaking to Daily Mirror Mr. Gunasekara said that a lorry carrying sand was shot at in the Manalkaduwa area in Point Pedro after it drove through a police checkpoint disregarding police orders to stop.

He said a tense situation had occured thereafter but that the police had been able to bring the situation under control and secure the area.

Mr. Gunasekara assured that an impartial investigation would be carried out by the SIU team that was due to reach the area by dawn tomorrow.

He said the police was conducting a search operation in the area to arrest the two persons that had escaped following the shooting. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

    This is not a communal thing. Law abiding citizens of Jaffna has been silently suffering because of these organised gangs. It is high time that the police act and put a stop to these criminal activities. Most police stations refuse to take actions when complained. I am glad finally some officer has decided to act on these gangs!!
