A section of the Meethotamulla garbage mountain had collapsed this afternoon destroying a large number of houses and injuring several people, residents said.

"We believe that some 100 houses were destroyed or damaged due to the incident," lawyer Nuwan Bopage told Daily Mirror online a short while ago.

Meanwhile, National Hospital sources confirmed that at least six persons were admitted to the hospital following the incident at Meethotamulla.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the three forces, Police and the Disaster Management Ministry to provide immediate relief to those who were affected due to the incident.

Sri Lanka Air Force said that it has deployed a Bell 212 helicopter with a Bambi bucket to control a fire that broke out after the collapsing of the garbage dump.

These people were settled here way before 2009, when the Garbage Dump was allocated 2 acres. Now it has encroached on to 18 acres.

Number of instances where garbage dumps either collapsed or caught fire around the world in the recent past. These should never be allowed near human settlements. Government must take the full responsibility. Now they have been in power for more than two years, they can't pass the ball to the previous government. Feel very sorry for the affected innocent people.

Environmental and human right activists should pay their attention on this. Government is turning blind eye on this to cover up their poor waste management policies.

This was expected by everybody but nothing tangible taken although Municipal council , Western provincial council .central government ,mega city development ministry ,urban development authority ,disaster management ministry. What is the use of these institutions spending vast amount of money if they can not find a place to dump the garbage or to find a new settlement for these hapless people through Housing development Minister.

Unless we keep our country clean and free from epidemics all our hope in tourism will vanish. You need Lee Kwan yew type leader to lead this country. Beautiful country. Good people except for a few spoilers. But only a tiny number of socially conscious politicians, academics, businessmen, professionals. Best is for our children to seek opportunities elsewhere.
