Salaries of ministers, deputy ministers, state ministers and all parliamentarians are likely to be increased by approximately 215 per cent to be on par with the recent salary increase given to judges, parliament sources said yesterday.

The need to increase salaries had come up for discussion at the party leaders meeting held on July 17 attended by JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Joint Opposition Parliament Group Leader Dinesh Gunawardane, UPFA Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva, Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella and TNA MP A. Sumanthiran.

The sources said the salary increment would be effective from January this year and that it would be paid this month with the arrears.

Accordingly, the salary of an MP would increase from Rs.54, 285 to Rs.120, 000 while the salary of a deputy minister goes up from Rs.63, 500 to 135, 000 while the salary of a minister and a state minister would be increased from Rs.65, 000 to Rs.140, 000. (Sujith Hewajulige)

WHAT A JOKE ! . People are TAXED to the neck to pay 225 useless politicians for doing NOTHING for its people and country .

    Samson Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:35 AM

Excellent to have a self imposed pay rise for those most of whom are unemployable outside Diyawanna. Salaries are already too high compared to those toiling with trains and delivering letters and others. JO must come forward and object to the proposal.

    Shehan Thursday, 02 August 2018 11:54 AM

    JVP you'll too....

    zameer Thursday, 02 August 2018 12:00 PM

JO too wants the salary increase. All rougues

    Smitha Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:40 AM

Maybe they too have felt the rise in the cost of living... paw

    Jude Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:42 AM

I agree that the ministers salaries are low!! However my concern is, one minister using 7-8 vehicles and the whole family using ministry vehicle with unlimited petrol claiming they work for ministry in the media division etc. Now that is unacceptable!!!

    ANTON Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:46 AM

ONE STEP FORWARD...... FIVE STEPS BACKWARD .... AND ROCK AND ROCK.

    BuffaloaCitizen Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:47 AM

I say no, absolutely no. Reason performance very much below expectations. No No No.

    Chari Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:49 AM

Nice to see Parliamentarians at least having a good life.

    Ravi Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:49 AM

This is a crime. This government is robbing from tax payers and feeding a bunch of culprits, who has not done any thing to this country other than robbing.

    ravin Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:54 AM

what professionalism does Sri Lankan MPs or Ministers have comparing themselves with professionals like Honorable Judges? As far as majority knows most of them are grade eight standard rogues, thieves, or generally speaking acute cancer of civilised society. .

    Thomas Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:56 AM

Only the Ministers etc feel the effect of High Cost of Living? What about the ordinary citizens? What are you going to give them?

    Wedage Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:56 AM

What about the others in Sri Lanka, specially Private Sector. Do not forget that in Private Sector there are majority employees drawing less than 15000 for the month. Even there are persons who were paid 800 to 1000 per day.

    kukula Thursday, 02 August 2018 12:47 PM

The private sector employee is taxed for the vehicle, fuel and allowance such as reimbursement of driver. The same tax must be charged to the parliamentarians.

    jayantha Thursday, 02 August 2018 08:59 AM

Wow .. What a increase .. superb no education no qualification, and easy money . God Bless Sri lankan

    Raj Thursday, 02 August 2018 09:05 AM

Well if they are getting more in cash, then the non-cash benefits which they get paid for by us should get a equal reduction otherwise the country is going more more more into debt and sure death...oh the plight of us who have been born into a 3rd world failed state

    Arul Thursday, 02 August 2018 09:11 AM

Look at these salaries.construction labour earn more than this.any surprise that these chaps making some extra bucks by bribe taking.government waste billions but dont pay employees properly.to make these politicians honest, pay them salaries at least they can eat ptoperly without beging.

Mr NPV Thursday, 02 August 2018 11:59 AM

    Ceylon Thursday, 02 August 2018 12:12 PM

Salary must be according to work performance.most of present parliment, cabinet are un qualified persons for even to be a clark.80% of them not study even grade 10.its to blame the political party leaders for appointing them for parliment electons from party.look at sirisena, whats his qualifications to be president???.

    Random Thursday, 02 August 2018 12:21 PM

This is actually an excellent idea. Now if they keep this salary, and get rid of vehicle permits and get rid of the other perks it would be better. With this salary, they don't have a valid claim saying that they don't get enough to live.

    Brainmaster Thursday, 02 August 2018 12:24 PM

I didnt know their salaries are that much low so its k to increase them now. But at the same time their performances must be watched closely. They also should pay income tax and their nin-cash extras must be limited. It is also high time to reduce the number of ministers drastically to 25% and the MPs by 50%. via DM Android App

    Nilame Thursday, 02 August 2018 12:27 PM

Well done! Get pay hikes on time but in return doing nothing for the sake of batterment to the people, pathetic!

    Rajeeva08 Thursday, 02 August 2018 12:48 PM

At the next presidential or general election (whichever comes first), I do NOT see any suitable candidate that is worth my valuable vote. I have voted since I was eligible to vote and all those that have been voted into power have misused my vote. I think a lot of people are sick of the current lot of Ministers who are not doing their jobs, yet expect all the perks and benefits that we, the people who put them there can only dream of.

    Sun Thursday, 02 August 2018 01:03 PM

Tom jones Thursday, 02 August 2018 02:43 PM

Ranil is getting his pension increased before he is kicked out of parliament at next election. All voters should collectively agree to vote against the UNP, SLPP, SLFP and JVP and chase the the President and the 225 rogues from Parliament.

    REEZ Thursday, 02 August 2018 03:10 PM

    OH! WHAT A F@

    mendis Thursday, 02 August 2018 03:37 PM

How can a 215% increase be justified ? Has our economic growth doubled ? Increasing the salaries of learned judges could be justified as they do a great service to the people by discharging justice (within the framework) . But what have these crooks done to get a pay hike ? Where is our country heading ? Why not get hold of the people responsible for the 'Bond scam' and let them finance a pay hike for all ?

    ram Thursday, 02 August 2018 03:50 PM

It is the right time to show our unity by objecting this salary hike. All should together join for a general strike and change the decision or to change the government.

    Pama Thursday, 02 August 2018 03:57 PM

This is 62 laks of intelligent voter wanted in Jan 2015What we saw, we reap.

    Ravi Thursday, 02 August 2018 04:03 PM

While these rogues are on a rampage, is there NOTHING the citizens of this country can do?

    Vini Thursday, 02 August 2018 05:18 PM

Increments for the ministers, bullshit taxes for the public. Salaries increased to the unproductive sector in the country. Why is JO and JVP silent?

    Shaz Thursday, 02 August 2018 05:19 PM

Now we know why the import duty on cars were increased yesterday. Well done Yahapalanaya!

    yousf Thursday, 02 August 2018 09:25 PM

If the politicians want s pay rise for doing nothing then others will also demand salary increase. When Govt says they have massive debts to pay why the hell these many uneducated unproductive politicians wants a pay rise. Time for the public to object. Its outrageous and unacceptable.

    Rohan Thursday, 02 August 2018 10:07 PM

Just 5 words. "This government has gone crazy". JVP you have my vote at the next election. Just get rid of these incompetent buffoons.

Eddie Wijesuriya Friday, 03 August 2018 05:24 PM

Why should these "parasites" get any salaries, perks and duty free luxury vehicles, free housing etc.. They are not even taxed unlike the poor people. No one forces them to to enter politics. They have to be stripped of all these privileges, and it is only then, and only then, the genuine , selfless, dedicated people will enter politics as a service to the country and it's people. The last few regimes came in for the sole purpose of robbing the country, unlike the "old brigade" which is no more. Eliminate these "PARASITES" at the next general election. investigate them, and if found guilt of corruption, confiscate all their ill gotten assets and jail them. The punishment should be deterrent so as to discourage future aspirants from following in their footsteps.
