The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is in favour of constitutional proposals which do not require the people's approval at a referendum, Party spokesman and State Minister Dilan Perera said yesterday.
He said President Maitripala Sirisena's mandate was to carry out changes which did not need a referendum because holding a referendum could be risky given the trend in some other countries where governments had been defeated.
“See what happened in Italy, Colombia and Britain where the people did not vote on the question asked but used it as an opportunity to protest against those governments,” the state minister said and added that it would be best to avoid a referendum.
“We need a referendum for the executive presidency to be abolished,” he asked. "Six months I said that President Sirisena would be the next presidential candidate." (Kelum Bandara)

Right to a referendum by for any legal modification at times needed approval of the society guidelines determined by the country,s legal and constitution.however the country with so much views socially politically race religion the matter of public option will be so varied opinion of the public will not be relevant as it often enter to petty political argument highly. Opinionated political chaos

Only political cowards with ulterior motives are the ones who are afraid of going in for a referendum of the people. The people of this country are well knowledgeable about what the north and the Tamils need to be given. It is the politicians who have been playing on race and religion for their own political survival. The referendum will clearly show that.

Referendum is a must as people are sensible than our politicians. If something accepted and sealed by the people, the politicians will be robbed a chance of doing politics over it in the way they did for the last 69 years.. if politicians agree something with 2/3 they will agree again to remove it in the years to come and put the country back in aware one again.

If the UNP and SLFP honestly explain to the people of the country including TNA SLMC and JVP ,certainly people will not oppose provided fluent speakers in Sinhala language from TNA . People should be educated convincingly about their approval as to why that is imperative. So just finding lame excuses are detrimental to the country and it's people.
