Sri Lanka's underworld is nowhere else but in universities, Higher Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said yesterday.

He told a news briefing that the masterminds of the underworld were inside the universities controlling the entire university system.

“It is because of a few students that the entire university system is in jeopardy. A few students take the initiative in organizing the protests which ultimately have no results. Much of the protest marches are not carried out with the intention of meting out justice but to fulfil the political agendas of bankrupt politicians,” he added.

“The Government spends about Rs.500,000 on a university student,” the minister said.

He said the prevailing crisis in the university was not the result of a failure in administration but in the ideology of a few university students who are motivated by politically-minded students.

Meanwhile, the minister said ragging had become a huge issue in the universities where a lot of students had been inconvenienced and even led to students having to forgo their university education.

“We hope to carry out stringent action on ragging under the Ragging Act,” he said.

He said a 24-hour phone line was available - 011 2123700 to lodge complaints by anybody who fell victim to ragging. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

    Ajja Saturday, 18 August 2018 01:05 PM

I think you have identified the root cause for the problem. Now give the injection and the whole of Srilankan parents and students are behind you.Ragging and Protest is mainly done due to shear jealousy, frustration due to private education including language problem.

Mr. Minister, you are right on that, Please don't ever give in to these half baked idiots. They are not only ruining the country but also destroying our country's image internationally. Please make sure these hand full of notorious characters who are backed by bankrupt politicians, are jailed for life. Then the majority of university students can do their studies without any hindrance.

Coconut Republic Saturday, 18 August 2018 01:28 PM

Mr Minister, all these are well known factors, but all what we need is complete eradication's from all front.

    Unchikun Saturday, 18 August 2018 01:51 PM

Agree, let me also add the underworld at Sri Jayawardenepura.

Jaffna Logic Saturday, 18 August 2018 02:14 PM

There can’t be any organised criminals of any sort controlling the university system. It is actually somestudents who are angry, long before they entered the university, because of the social and economical deprivations they face while growing up who find the university to be an ideal place to vent their frustrations. One of the solution could be of creating a class based two tier university system.

    silly Saturday, 18 August 2018 07:23 PM

That is the most idiotic comment ever. A two tier system would create a class problem among universities and after graduation.

    Nuwan Sunday, 19 August 2018 07:23 AM

Class based society and a class based campus system is ideal in Jaffna Logic. But not for the rest of the country.

    Thanos Saturday, 18 August 2018 02:16 PM

Install a "monitoring system" with which Uni security staff can watch the movements, miscreants. That's not a big deal. Ministers and all parliamentary leeches are involved with underhand deals so why not this ??

    Rod Saturday, 18 August 2018 03:01 PM

You are correct minister...these thugs should be given the madu walige...

    Ceylon Saturday, 18 August 2018 06:28 PM

Dont educate criminals from peoples money.they later loot and cheat the same people given them free education.

    Karu Saturday, 18 August 2018 03:11 PM

What else to expect when higher education is free with guaranteed employment in the public sector. Freebies create a corrupt mind.

    Sonali Saturday, 18 August 2018 03:40 PM

    Saman Saturday, 18 August 2018 05:34 PM

Very good minister. gangs and people associated with Ministers, MPs and locals councils are so innocent, well educated, and working so hard neck and neck with their superiors to make this country a better place ( somewhere else in the multiverse)

    Tinkiriya Saturday, 18 August 2018 06:00 PM

The sponsors and incubator of the underworld is the narakadiya on Diyawanna Oya.

Gihan Perera Saturday, 18 August 2018 06:17 PM

Dear Mr Minister..you are one of the few politicians who is educated, is not afraid to point out what is wrong and has a sense of identity towards our country and culture..you should seriously consider leading this country or being in a position of power someday in the future..no one is perfect..even dutugamunu was dushta gamini! but no one with all good qualities will enter politics these days..so the only hope is poeple like you...

    Observer Sunday, 19 August 2018 07:51 AM

the good one Monday, 20 August 2018 09:23 AM

yeah. Once you suppress all the opposing entities, then it's easy to convince the ranch of sheep to whatever end right?

    Joseph Monday, 20 August 2018 12:27 PM

Bring in law to state that one need to complete the degree in a given time frame ,4-5 years. if not the degree will not be awarded as in the case of private universities. By doing so you will save lot of tax money and give an opportunity to may to enjoy free university education
