Government will convert SAITM into a non-profit institution under multiple ownership, State Minister of Higher Education Mohanlal Grero told Parliament today.
He said this in response to a question asked by Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanyake.
The state minister said a special council would be set up to monitor private universities and ensure the quality of their study courses.
He assured that the government would take into consideration the proposals made by various parties including those by the Maha Nayaka Theras.
Mr. Dissanayke asked why the government was remaining stubborn when dealing with the SAITM issue. "Is the government turning a deaf ear to the request by the Maha Nayaka Theras," he asked and claimed that the government was only interested in safeguarding the SAITM owner. Lets convert lyceum to a non profit organization. What do you say Mr Grero
Rex Tuesday, 17 October 2017 07:01 PM
It is already a Not-for-Profit institution. The management and staff receive ONLY SALARY for their involvement and NOT DIVIDEND/PROFIT. The excess income is reinvested to excel the quality and to expand to the education in other (remote) areas

If anyone believes that Lyceum is a non-for-profit institution, s/he is a pure idiot. This is a private business runs by a businessman cum politician. Now the fox is appointed to protect hens. I admire his business concept. Excellent money making venture. But when dimwits say that owner doesn't take profit, it's really annoying. Even Grero is laughing from rear-end.

SAITM should not be conducted MBBS, but can conduct courses related to bio streem

SAITM should be abolished. Period. May be it can provide courses for government nurses.

Multiple ownership and non profit motives don't go hand in hand. Just another ruse to put off the issue. What needs to be done immediately is to (a) temporarily close SAITM (b) absorb the present children into the state medical faculties or a special medical faculty with a proper course of medical studies including clinicals simultaneously with theory (c) ask SAITM to reapply for registration and obtain approval according to normal procedure free of political interference and in line with state policy on private medical education (d) set up a commission to inquire into SAITM financial activities with the Auditor General's department as a key player, especially since this is an educational institute.

Grero should turn his Lyceum empire to a Not-for-Profit and preach other to follow suite. He should understand he needs to practice before he start preaching... While benefiting available opportunities for the private sector, he is trying to deny others the same privilege. Instead he should expand link up to provide quality education for Lyceum students who finishes school education.

Swallow SAITM and beware of an incurable stomach ache

SAITM was created to give an alternate to government run universities which has limited capacity. Government universities can only accept 20% of the eligible candidates. What will the remaining 80% do? Not everyone can afford to send their children overseas for higher education. I think it is the duty of the government to address this shortcoming. If SAITM is not up to the standard, fix it rather than closing it down. I still believe there is a communal flavor to the whole episode.
