President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have said the government should project a common stance on the SAITM issue instead of ministers making contradictory statements.

The Cabinet discussed this matter yesterday amid ministers expressing various views on it. Ministers like Rajitha Senaratne and S.B. Dissanayake are in favour of SAITM being operated as a non-state university while Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka and Dayasiri Jayasekara asking that it be abolished.

However, against this background the President stressed the need for the government to take a common stance on this matter.

The government has proposed that SAITM be administered by a trustee and another proposal to reduce the fees charged from students. The President said all demands, other than the one for nationalising SAITM, had been met and pointed out that the final decision would be taken after the Supreme Court ruling on the matter. Please don't abolish or nationalize SAITM. The main argument of the people against SAITM is that this will be the end of free education. We already have private schools all over the country. Then we also have private universities in all streams except medicine. Still free education runs without any problems or danger. So why not allow this private medical college which will also save money to the government as well as parents? Just no logic.

SAITM should not be nationalized. If the issue is the standard of its courses, then corrective steps should be taken to improve those. Already there are private schools, international schools, private hospitals, tution classes and other private digree awarding institutions etc. In that case are we to abolish those also?

Do not allow these few physicians to dictate terms to the Govt.and the President. Give in to their demands means that the Govt.is going to create a monster and thereafter all those who are in essential services will start blackmailing the Govt.

Please do not close down or nationalize the SAITM. The country needs private universities.
