The Inter University Student's Federation (IUSF) said yesterday the six months' suspension on admitting students to SAITM would not make any difference and vowed to launch a countrywide protest campaign from today.
IUSF Convener Lahiru Weerasekara told a media briefing that they could not agree with the proposal made by the Deans of the eight State Medical Faculties and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella to suspend admissions to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) until the completion of the periodic review of its medical degree programme.
“The suspension will not make any difference because SAITM does not enrolling students on a monthly basis. Admissions usually take place once or twice a year and this year's enrollments may have been completed by now,” he said.
Mr. Weerasekara said the government was attempting to fool the Deans while supporting SAITM Chairman Neville Fernando to continue with his activities to privatise education.
He said the graduates were expected undergo clinical training in a state hospital and pass a licensing examination conducted by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).
“We oppose these proposals and will not let up in our struggle to safeguard free education. SAITM should be abolished immediately. Our fight is not against standards but against the privatisation of free education,” Mr. Weerasekara said and added that today's protest campaign would be launched from Kandy, Galle, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura and Kuliyapitiya. They are just puppets in the hands of the politicians and they have no time to attend lectures. Can you ever imagine in private universities?

Hi Lahiru Weerasekara, why do u wast your young life, and those other kids who are instigated by your lot to follow your distructive path. All of you should be studying and working hard to build up a good future rather than on streets doing contract for bankrupt politicians. This is all owing to the free education, if you or your parents pay, all of would know and feel the pain of it, and none of you would be on street instead studying and work hard to be a good human being. My friend, keep in mind, education, - public or private - is a fundermental universal birthright of an individual, none should have any right to deny or interfere it, if they do, it be a unpadonable high crime against to the humanity.

Is SAITM the only private educational institute in the country? If you are against privatization how come you are attacking only SAITM? This is pure jealousy and paranoia. All these protestors are probably reacting out of their own feelings of personal inadequacy OR you just think of yourself as someone superior for being able to get into a local university and everyone else as inferior and so does not deserve to get a degree. Why don't you use your time and energy to work on your own life and growth instead of wasting it doing these protests. Why can't you use the free education you are blessed to have achieved to do a real contribution to the medical field and your community, instead of dwelling in these narcissistic protests? Do you think your parents will be proud to see their daughter or son as a professional in their field or as a protestor trying to stop the education of another parent's child? Fellow Sri Lankan, you are wasting your precious youth by following the herd.

Govt should ban these people from all soughts of free education then only they will realize the true picture. Yahapalane is so weak on these issues and every day we see a chok a block of traffic in our capital Colombo. These small Rat's didn't dance like this during the previous regime.

These rioters will never ever prosper in life. Private sector should screen these people and should not give employment. They are trouble makers.
