The Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry has decided to increase the fines to Rs.25,000 for seven traffic offences such as drunk driving and driving without a valid license, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said today.
The other offences warranting such a fine are overtaking from the left side, driving without a valid insurance, speeding, driving across the level crossings when gates closed, or assigning someone without a valid license to drive your vehicle.
However, the date of implementation has not been fixed.
Meanwhile, the minimum fine of Rs.2,500 for traffic offences has been rescinded.
The police have been advised to strictly enforce the law, Minister Siripala de Silva said.
The discussions had further revealed that more than 49,000 incidents were reported of vehicles driven under the influence of liquor and 50,000 of vehicles driven without a valid driving licence, he said.
Addressing the meeting, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said the fines were increased and imposed to minimise road accidents and to protect the citizens.
There is no major objection to collecting money for the government through this process, Mr. Karunanayake said.
“The Finance Minister cannot reduce the number of accidents to a great extent, but he can reduce them to some extent. The minister has promised to install CCTV cameras at critical points on the road using the latest technology as in other countries,” Mr. de Silva said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Fine for overtaking from left side is crime, what happen if a driver drives his vehicle slowly on the right side track without giving room to overtake? Most of the ladies and learners they drive the vehicle on the right side.

In spite of the facilities of safe commuting provided Jay-Walking is rife. Wellawatte is terrible, but the cops are deaf and blind. Fine the Jay-walkers at least 300/- and I it should stop.

I can see Mr. Wijeratne of the PBOA debating... the government should not give into this bus mafia. Every time the fare has been increased the convenience of the public have been used as leverage but where is the benefit to the public. The drivers are still reckless racers, the conductors are still foul mouthed louts and many vehicles have jammed windows, broken/torn seats, no bells, ear splitting music, and the fare is raised by another rupee as we never get the one rupee balance!! Benefit of the traveller? My foot.

Implement asap.try to save some innocent lives.if you delay many people will be dead by next hour. Bus drivers are road killers.( not all). They will protest soon..
Kale Friday, 25 November 2016 07:20 AM
2 of the biggest safety measures in saving lives on the road are stopping drink drivers, and making people wear seatbelts.Yet stand next to any road and you will see many front seat passengers not wearing them, and almost no back seat passengers. And how is it that many vehicles, minivans etc., have no seatbelts at all?Do customs take them out at the port as being illegal and then sell them?No wonder so many die on the roads, it is like you are all wanting to be reincarnated more quickly.

shantha gamlath Monday, 21 November 2016 07:19 PM
Also, draw attention for the passenger side as well. People are crossing roads without concern crossing lanes, so motorists are facing many difficulties. Disciplinary should be given not only for the motorists but also must implement passengers as well.
Rufus Norton Monday, 21 November 2016 07:22 PM
The minimum fine of Rs.2500 should stay notwithstanding pressure from those who are in favour of traffic offences ending is injury, maiming and death of innocent children and adults. The Government should be strong to make correct decisions that affect the welfare of the public.

How about including right of way as most of the drivers don't give the right of way or they don't know of this the way they drive .
moga Monday, 21 November 2016 07:57 PM
correct the three wheelers to drive in one lane without creeping into gaps..how to go further if people drive on the right lane slowly and without giving way for others.. fine those who use the pedestrian crossing like their own road by crossing slowly and jumping suddenly when vehicles coming very closer..

Most of the drivers do not know the meaning of the white line put across main junctions. That is to stop the vehicle and to allow vehicles coming from the right to pass. Most of the drivers pass through the white line unnoticed and without any care. Police officers do not take any notice either.
S.P.RAMKUMAR Monday, 21 November 2016 08:32 PM
Fine should be between minimum( present amount) to Maximum (25000)

Flanker Tuesday, 22 November 2016 09:01 AM
How about jumping Red lights !!! importantly the training schools should be given guidelines with regards to discipline driving on the road... mere putting your feet into the accelerator is not driving, most drivers as I have noticed cannot reverse properly either... where is the lane driving, at least on roads where lanes are drawn.Someone driving below the allocated speed limit too should be fined as done in most Gulf countries for he creates traffic snarls...Driving fast and driving recklessly are two different objectives, hence the latter should be fined.
