It was revealed in Parliament today that more than Rs.120 million had been spent for the 60-member delegation which accompanied the President for the United Nations General Assembly sessions in 2016.
This was revealed in response to a question asked by MP Udaya Gammanpila on the cost incurred by the government. State Minister Niroshan Perera said the 60-member delegation included several ministers, media personnel and president's staff.
The MP asked whether it was a part of good governance to take a large delegation and at such a high cost.
The minister said the previous government had taken even larger delegations spending millions of rupees to which the MP said the present government was elected by the people to correct such bad precedents. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Think 60 member delegation is too big for a country like us. Good if the media can also publish such numbers of a few other countries i.e. Couple from Europe Asia far east to get some idea. Also would be interesting to know the breakdown of the delegation.

Can you please publish the names of the 60 people for the information of the tax payers? There qualifications, their positions, the purpose them being included in the delegation and the contribution they have made on this delegation.

Previous government had taken even larger delegations spending millions of rupees to which the MP said the present government was elected by the people to correct such bad precedents ..... Accordingly they have done worst than what we have done so we are not so bad ? How can we throw these mutts out of politics ? It is not the money comes out of their pockets .... utter waste of local currency.

All the guys are rogues. If the present guys are doing because the last government did, we could have kept the last government.

Once again the President has forgotten what he first did when he came to power, he cut cost. Then over the years he has jacked up the cost for his own pomp and pageantry.

So what’s the big news about that millions of tax payers money spent by politicians on foreign luxury trips, this has been the practice and norm of Sri Lankan politics. Such news on expensive bonanza foreign trips isn’t the first and sure not the last.

Their begging bowl was still empty;they had plenty of questions to answer from International community about Genocide and land grab in NE,Tamil Homeland.

This is another glaring instance where words did not match deeds. Sirisena is playing the role of Mr Hyde and Dr.Jekyll. This government came to power promising to wipe out corruption, waste, nepotism but is following the previous government. This is another incident denting his image badly.

Those who preach do not practice. Colossal waste of funds for no benefits other than personal benefits may be. Last regime and present are all same so voters must think carefully.

Number too many. Problems solved none. Benefit to the country miniscule.one third is probably high. What to expect unless reason and explanation given.action must speak how any thing isdone

That is effectively LKR 2 million per person. This is while having trained staff at the Sri Lankan mission in the UN in New York as well as a large staff at the Sri Lankan embassy in Washington.

You guys are just jealous. These hard working politicians need a break. Just look at how people are enjoying with a booming economy.

Ok MR used to travel even with much larger entourage. But 60 is also too much. 6 (10%) would have been correct via DM Android App

Previous regime took the largest delegation, and this regime, larger delegation. Only the difference of two letters!
