Royal College Grade 1 admissions: 31 applicants de-listed

Thirty one children who had applied for Grade-1 admissions at Royal College in Colombo allegedly using fraudulent documents will be de-listed, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said today adding that the admissions would resume next week.

He told a media briefing that the admissions to the Grade-1 at Royal College had been suspended after the Education Ministry launched a special inquiry into the admission process.

“The inquiry was launched after receiving several complaints about the irregularities that are alleged to have taken place in admissions. We have investigated 147 addresses mentioned in the applications and have recovered 31 fraudulently prepared documents,” the minister said.

He said the documents had addresses of several public places, security counters, religious places and business establishments.

“In one of these documents, the address was that of the Northern Province Chief Minister’s residence. The CM was not even aware of what had happened,” the minister said and added that investigations were continuing. (Kalathma Jayawardhane and Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Please launch an investigation into all students currently at the school, not just grade 1 entrants this year, the same has happened every year. 50% of the students at the school have no right to be there, same goes for all Colombo schools not just Royal, probably not even just Colombo suspect the same happens in Kandy etc. Corrupt from the bottom up this country is, lets start putting it right.

This should have been done before parents bring in students to 1st day of school. Imagine the fate and psychological aspects of the 31 students. Now they don't have any school. They have come dressed to school on first day to find out school is closed. This is bit inhuman.

What a farce, this must be the only country in the world that gorging documents is not a jail-able offence. Both the parents and students should be jailed at least for a day so their crimes will not be forgotten.

I personally know many students of Royal College (over the last few decades) who have told me that when their parents applied for their admission, then some school authorities would unexpectedly drop in to the address that has been declared in the admission form to check whether the parents and the child (applicant) actually lived there. I am also aware that the Late L.D.H Pieris a former Principal of Royal College too would on some occasions accompany these officials. He was a very noble person.
