Supporters of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) yesterday staged a protest in the Kotagala town against changing the name of the Thondaman Vocational Training Centre and the playground in Hatton, which had been named after the late Minister Saumya Murthi Thondaman.

Business establishments in the town put up shutters to show their support for the protest.

The protesters marched from the Hatton-Kotagala-Nuwara-Eliya Pradheshiya Sabha office to the Kotagala town. They said that the name of the late minister could not be obliterated from the minds of the people by changing the name board of an institution. (Ranjith Rajapakse)

Thondamans have been plundering the coffers of the CWC for decades. In addition, I believe the older Thondaman was granted loans for millions and were written off when he died. I do not know much about the present Thondamans but Newspaper reports seem to indicate that they are no different. When I was a Planter in the 50's I met the older Thondaman at a Labour Tribunal. I don't remember much about him. However, I do know that money was taken from poor labourers as contributions and it seems to have enriched the Thondaman family. They are allowed to get away with this kind of behavior due to political patronage. i.e Politicians provide this kind of patronage to garner votes to stay in power.
