Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) Chairman Professor Carlo Fonseka’s term of service came to an end today after serving for five and half years.

Speaking to the media while leaving the SLMC premises, Prof. Fonseka said his tenure had ended today and added that no request had been made by the government for an extension of his service.

“I was appointed to this post in 2012 by former health minister Maithripala Sirisena. My official tenure was to end on December 31, 2016, as a SLMC Chairman’s tenure is generally valid for a period of 5 years,” he said.

He said however, the President had taken steps to extend his tenure by 6 more months.

“I have handed over my resignation one month earlier. I am 85 now. I thought I would not be able to perform my service effectively,” he said. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

One can make a big blunder when trying to make comments about a person without knowing the truth! Prof CF is a great human being!

    KI Sunday, 02 July 2017 11:22 AM

He did not ask for an extension. Are you worried about that too?

    Ashoka Saturday, 01 July 2017 10:45 PM

Dear Professor, thanks a lot for the service you did to the nation. Thanks a lot for taking a wise decision with good insight. Also so sorry about the destruction you did to the free education by bringing students to the street due to your wrong decision to back GMOA and political parties. Rest well and live long. Budu Sir, please do not come again.

There is an Labor law in every country. if you are 85 years old, you must retired and take rest.Who will offer re-contract for this age, it must be a joke,Best thing is keep you self respect as a former Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) Chairman Professor and take rest. or be an " ADVISER"

Dr Ranjith Dambawinna Saturday, 01 July 2017 03:22 PM

Forget all the politics, forget all his 'Appointments', this is a very superior person we should all try to admire and emulate! At a very crucial stage of my life as a medical student, he and his wife provided food, shelter and moral support for me and my wife, and better still, even refused to accept any payment!I am not ashamed to say that I was penniless and destitute at that time!Himself a brilliant Academic went on to become my teacher and my mentor. Above all, his absolute dedication to his work, his boundless compassion to fellow beings and his unparalleled skills as a teacher, is a quality we should all try to admire and achieve!I implore my former fellow countrymen to give this truly superior person, the highest honour and blessing in his Retirement! He deserves all the accolade.I wish you, noble Sir, a very happy 'Retirement'!

Prof. Carlo said, "I am 85 now. I thought I would not be able to perform my service effectively.” Then, why are the others interested in keeping him as the SLMC chairman?

    alex Saturday, 01 July 2017 09:08 AM

You should be humble enough to understand your status at present and retire without making a fuss. It is very sad to see that you are with these lunatics on the SAITM issue, you being a reputed professor. You seem to have hopes for reappointment which is unfair at your age.

    ase Saturday, 01 July 2017 08:54 AM

yes prof. correct move, bevor i say bye to you a word of you, you were our hero in end 70s, all against about mythos and beliefs we even went to kataragama fire walk and got a dam good treat after throwing water on to the firewall. after all those you left us and then we understood that you just used us for a show and joined mahinda, what a shame ? any way i wish you the best and never use people in the future or in your next life to become a "pora" ok.bye good bye prof., sorry but we do not miss you.

Dalu Banda Saturday, 01 July 2017 08:45 AM

I hope he will fully retire and involve in literature, film industry, music etc., and not in politics as his involvements could harm the society where he belongs.

85 years old man leading the SLMC

Monte Carlo Saturday, 01 July 2017 07:42 AM

At least Carlo was not against SAITM - but only commented on standards.

Sameen Jan Saturday, 01 July 2017 07:37 AM

Bit late to realise at 83 he was ineffective. He was in cahoots with the black mailing of the poor sick by the GMOA. Remember after 30 years he said he believed a SDIG's 'revelation' that the Jaffna library was burned by the LTTE!

    Dulan Saturday, 01 July 2017 07:15 AM

Thank God. He is a hypocrite supported SATIM during MR time and oppose it now

    MyLanka Saturday, 01 July 2017 07:04 AM

He's not gone yet. Prez will ask him to come back for anther six months. Can an 85 year old make decisions in an important role such as this? besides which, HE is controlled by GMOA thugs
