President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have turned down a Cabinet paper submitted by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe seeking office and staff facilities for MPs assigned to oversee the implementation of the government’s ‘Gam Peraliya’ programme.
The recommendation has been made by a committee comprising officials including the Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Finance Ministry.
The Prime Minister submitted the Cabinet paper on behalf of the committee. The committee had recommended that each MP assigned to monitor the programme implementation was provided with a separate office and a staff of seven.
The government had earlier decided to assign the MPs who do not hold ministerial posts for this purpose.
The President had reportedly rejected the Cabinet paper saying it was unnecessary and also turned down a Cabinet paper put forward by Development Strategies and International Trade Minister Malik Samarawickrama seeking to allow ministers to retain private lawyers at government expense in fundamental rights cases filed against them.
The President said they could retain lawyers only from the Attorney General’s Department. (Kelum Bandara)

It's good if the Prez is actually making these decisions even at the eleventh hour...

The heading is not supported by the contents of the article. The PM had not asked for "perks" for MPs doing 'Gamperaliya'. He had asked for offices and staff, which should be necessary if the programme is to be a success. By the way, why is the President seems to be not supporting good programmes of his own Govt?

The President may be thinking his decision will be viewed as a popular decision but he doesn't realize he's digging his own grave by not supporting development work of his own government. This situation is only strengthening Ranil's image. The President is in the habit of turning down proposals and suggestions of the government but it's hard to believe that those proposals and suggestions were taken without him being in the loop. So why is he turning them down after they are made public?

It' getting obvious. Ranil started with a pay hike 'carrot' for MP's. Now he is trying another gimmick with his side kick Malik, a damn useless nincompoop with an ulterior motive just like in Julius Caesar getting stabbed in the back by Brutus. Mr. President, note the enemy in your house.

This is how developments put on hold for the last 3 years. People did not vote for SLFP or UPFA candidate in the last presidential election but the country is now ruled as per SLFP aspirations.

you should stick to what you uttered, otherwise, people around you push you to change your mind, then make you a laughing stock

FINALLY - at LONG LAST HE seems to have developed a little strength in his spine, and very GOOD for him too!Excellent if he continues in this manner to set the example he was supposed to, many years ago as soon as he came to power.. Let him be firm, courageous and stand up to ANYONE who does wrong and acts AGAINST the interestsof Sri Lanka and her people. MM
