President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have said at the Cabinet meeting yesterday that the payments made to the Ministers and MPs amounted to be honorariums, and therefore they could not be considered for taxation.
The President reportedly said the MPs had an honorific before their names, and therefore, what they drew from the State could not be seen as salaries but as honorariums.
Honorariums are payments given for professional services that are rendered nominally without charge.
The President made these remarks in the event of some Ministers complaining earlier that they had been made heavily liable for the PAYE Tax (Pay As You Earn Tax). (Kelum Bandara)

Here we go again. These people receive all the privileges like, Duty free Vehicles which can be transferred , Subsidized meal , Telephone Allowances , this and that and still it is not enough. If they have any Honour , will they transfer their Duty Free Allowance. What a Crap

Wow, that is a great perspective. Now why didn't I think of this before ?Does the prefix to a name "honourable" makes a person truly honourable? With rampant corruption, criminal activities, illegal activities, and abuse of power they are involved in, how on earth these people be honourable? These people are anything but honourable.

He is confusing Honorary with Honourable. Yes, Honorary office holders get honorariums but honourable has nothing to do with emoluments.

Foreign employees should not be tax. Because, they are not doing job in Sri Lanka. This government impose new tax for foreign remittances from Sri Lankan who work overseas and another 5% on interest income from their NRFC accounts. They do not have retirement benefit, pension or duty free vehicle or any other benefits. If one died in abroad, his/her relative has to pay money for taking the body into Sri Lanka.

We can understand why MPs received money monthly and pension after 5 yrs as honorariums. 96 MPs failed OK exams and majority of MPs do not passed AL exam.

this is definition is not fair,when the government employees have to work 30 years servise to get their pension,but MPs have to be in parliment for 5 years they get full pention ,this is unfair and like one who got the spoon serving himseif,they bend law of the land many ways to accumulate money,if this is honorarium, then pension not attached to that or if its salary they too have to pay PAYE,
