President Maithripala Sirisena said the decision taken to spend large sums to provide vehicles on rent basis to 58 Parliamentarians who were holding the Chairmanship posts of Regional Development Committees would not be implemented.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror he further said a decision would be taken to implement a new system at the cabinet meeting held next week.
He further said the decision taken to provide vehicles on rent basis would ultimately result in the renting company owning the vehicles, and not the Parliamentarian or the government.
He also said he had discussed a new system for supplying vehicles to Parliamentarians with the Prime Minister. (Ajantha Kumara Agalakada)

Giving vehicles to parliamentarians have become sort of a bribe or a gift. The taxpayers pay for the vehicle so it should belong to the tax payer. At the end of their terms in office they should return the vehicles for the elected ones in a new parliament.

Why are these ill considered hapazard decisons taken without proper assessment of impact all around them. Looks like the cabinet is composed of kindergarten kids as implications are so obvious and how they all agree, beats me.

Why took so long to overturn when it was common sense the move would have been an utter waste of public money via DM Android App

Your Excellency, how about a fleet of vehicles managed by the Government stores which used to control surplus cars? I think vehicles with higher ground clearance is useful for people serving in remote areas but Benz and BMWs do not hold well on roads in developing nations and given that the rationale is to go outside to work in their villages, then perhaps what you need is a fleet of 4 wheeled drive vehicles and vehicles like Subarus with higher ground clearance. Then have an online system for them to log-on and make reservations for trips they need to make outside Colombo., This will create jobs with auto repair technicians and managers to manage the fleet in a centralized location.

If the country is in a bad financial status it should be reflected across the whole cross section of people. It does not make sense politicians ride on BMWs on tax payers money and we are burdened more. Remember it's not RW in the opposition. It's MR. Please don't take things for granted.
