Sri Lanka Police will not only to take legal action against drivers who violate traffic laws but also to encourage disciplined driving, Police Chief Pujith Jayasundara said today.

He said this when launching a programme to identify and reward disciplined drivers in Colombo and highlighted the fact that due to reckless driving by a few had caused problems to most people.

The Police Chief said from time to time the police would implement various mechanisms to avoid or reduce traffic congestion and accidents.

The second phase of the programme to identify disciplined was launched in Colombo today. Police said trained policemen would be stationed at strategic locations while some will travel incognito in buses and unlabeled vehicles. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

if good drivers are identified, all others would be bad drivers or there would be third category.

    Rohan Monday, 18 September 2017 05:44 PM

How exactly do they IDENTIFY "good drivers"??What is the criteria?

    Dee Monday, 18 September 2017 11:49 PM

Drivers who:a) Keep the signal on for over 5 minutes to turn into a by road from a main road(when its obvious to the cop who's manning it, that he is turning and has not stopped for the fun of it)b) who hog at 45kmph on the middle of the road when there is approx 1/4 km in front.c) who slow down and put the signal about 1/2 km from where they actually want to turn on a road where traffic is at 15kmph.d) who wait for no vehicle is sight for about 1/4 km when putting onto a main road.Man the list goes on.

Sir, Please do not waste time on this, JUST GET ALL BUSES TO CLOSE THE DOORS, THE DOOR OPENING AND CLOSING RESPONSIBILITY MUST BE GIVEN TO THE DRIVER.WHEN HE REACHES THE BUS HALT, HE WILL OPEN THE REAR DOOR SO THE PEOPLE CAN GET OFF, tHEN HE CAN MOVE FORWARD AND OPEN THE FRONT DOOR FOR PAX TO GET IN. tHIS IS HOW IS DONE IN ALL OTHER COUNTRIES .iF YOU CANNOT GET THIS LITTLE THING DONE , PLEASE GIVE UP TRYING TO CONTROL THE CAPTAINS AND PILOTS OF THE BUSES.wE HAVE TO START RESPECTINGT THE DRIVER OF THE BUS AS THE BOSS OR CAPTAIN OF THE BUS.BECAUSE I HAVE HEARD THE BUS OWNERS ADDRESS THEM AS JOCKYS.

It was the British who created the police and gave them the influence in almost every sphere of human activity. This should stop, for a start traffic should be handled exclusively by a new agency with no connection to police.

silly ass Monday, 18 September 2017 10:28 PM

First you need to define and explain to all Sri lankans or most of them what Discipline means!!! and while you are doing that also what rules and regulations , courtesy, good manners and patience means. I really don't think that day will dawn in this country where these will be followed.

    Dee Monday, 18 September 2017 11:54 PM

Mr. IGP Sir. First teach those 'highway patrol' guys on 400cc bikes road rules. They want driver on a right turn only lane(where straight is a dead end) obviously stopped to turn right because you can't go straight to keep signal on till the bulb burns. Obviously educated in some odd joints and have never been in a vehicle.

What a joke, good driving should be the norm. There should be no reward,as everyone is expected to follow the rules of the road.ONLY IN SRI LANKA
