The Joint Opposition (JO) today threw a challenge at Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to bring back former Central Bank (CB) Governor Arjuna Mahendran to Sri Lanka like former President Mahinda Rajapaksa vowed to ensure the return of former Sri Lankan envoy to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga.
Addressing a news briefing on behalf of the JO, former Minister Professor G.L. Peiris said the Prime Minister should secure that Mr Mahendran’s return to deal with the Central Bank Bond Scam and its repercussions spreading like tentacles of an octopus.
“The University Grants Commission (UGC) had invested Rs. 1 billion worth of UGC funds in the controversial Bond Transaction. This move had resulted in a loss of Rs.700,000 to Rs.800,000 per one university lecturer in their provident funds. Minister Kabir Hashim tried to pin the blame for this on the previous Government, which had relinquished office a long time before that,” he said.
He said Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL) had issued some 10,000 cheques to various personnel as inducements. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Vowing to get him back is one thing but actually getting him back is another. First get Udayanga here then issue challenge. Also it could be a ploy to get Udayanga's travel ban lifted so he could escape from Dubai.

Something fishy going on. What was MR doing all this time? Also this shows that UW was following MR's orders right along. They may be doing this because the coast is clear now. May be they have bumped off or have brought off the witnesses. Or may be they have destroyed all the vital evidence by now like in Thajudeen case and other cases.

Jaliya is more important to be brought to face charges in Sri Lanka than Udayanga. His close relative, another Jaliya is the conduit travelling between America and Sri Lanka, which the CID has to check as urgent.

Udayanga is Sri Lankan and Mahendran is Singaporean. That's the difference. But, yes Mahendran should stand trial for the misdemeanor.

How can he come when the lynch mob is awaiting his return?
Saraa Goyya Wednesday, 27 June 2018 09:49 PM
To be fair, do both; MR brings Udayanga from UAE and RW brings Mahendran from wherever he is hiding. That will not happen. What happens is one HORA accuses the other HORA.
dilshan Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:55 PM
RW can ask but Mahendran need not oblige as he is not a srilankan. That is the differenceBesides MR has been knowingly protecting a criminal whom he could have got down anytime when he was wanted
