JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake asked yesterday whether a scientific study had been carried out to assess the impact on animals due to the opening of the Dehiwala Zoo at night.
He told Parliament that animals need rest at night and added that keeping the zoo open at night may risk the lives of the animals.
"This is a serious matter. The animals may die,” he said.
Mr. Ratnayake speaking at the debate on Sri Lanka's sustainable Development Bill said a zoo which was kept open at nights in England was renting it for late night parties to raise income.
He added that the Dehiwala Zoo also may have to be rented out to cover the extra expenses.
He said the impact report on animals should be presented in Parliament.
Wildlife Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said he had the experts' reports on the matter and added that they had revealed that there would be no impact on the animals by keeping the zoo open at night. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Gentlemen, please say 'no' no no no to each and everything. Look at countries like Singapore. The kind of experiences they have created for a visitor. In our country, we want 3 million tourists. But they have not much to do. On Sundays even we Sri Lankans have nothing to do. Please be a bit open minded. Animals in the zoo will manage. Dont overly worry.

The JVP should be locked up in cages and viewed by the public as pests of the nation. Even the fellow monkeys will look better than this lot.

Animals are more humane than politicians.

one party who has always says no to everything. Backward thinking of the JVP. Look at the Singapore night safari. it is doing pretty good.

This should be looked at rationally.. Will it work ? How will it impact on the present cadres at work in the zoo. A shift basis will cause a strain on the zoo's income. An animal can acclimatize itself in it's environment but how will it do so especially during the Sri Lankan summer in searing lights at night. Not a good idea, anyway ??

I have to agree with JVP at least for the first time. Take a look at the zoo hours in California. Everybody closes at 5 or 6 PM. There must be a reason for that.

Only zoo needs the Californian system,my dear we have to move forward.it's only still 10pm.why not we give it a try.we are still filled with negative thoughts and ideas.

Singapore has its Night Safari separately, in addition to the Singapore Zoo. Night Safari is in fact a memorable experience who visits Singapore, and you should not miss it. Surely, the investment on the establishment and operation of Night Safari should be huge, and the same has paved the way to success. You could watch animals in the woods under flood lights, whilst travelling in a tram. The maintenance and well being of the Animals are mostly looked after by Companies. If we can maintain standards (including the good health and maintenance of the animals), definitely this would attract more and more tourists. One of my Japanese friend who is resident in Sri Lanka with his family told me that they really enjoy our zoo.We shall get Sponsorship from Sri Lankan conglomerates to meet standards.

Why abuse animals at Dehiwala zoo? If you need night safaris and night attractions, then open that zoo floating on Diyawanna Oya that has unique species not found elsewhere on the planet?
