The power failure which occurred in several areas this morning was due to the breakdown of a power generator in the first phase of the Norochcholai Coal power station (Lakvijaya), Power and Energy Ministry Media Spokesman Pathum Paskuwal said.

He said the breakdown was caused due to a technical failure in a boiler belonging to the first phase of the plant.

He said the malfunctioning of the generator would not affect the National Power Supply.

Meanwhile, Ceylon Electricity Board Media Spokesman Sulakshana Jayarathna said it would take at least three days to rectify the defect as the technical team could not reach the boiler room due to the high temperature. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Who buys Chinese rubbish must live with these problems. This should be a warning, however, not to continue to buy Chinese products.

Countrys 55-60% electricity need (around 14.5 GWh per day 14.5 million units per day) fulfilled by Lackvijaya Power Station. Average generation cost per unit is below 7 rupees. If this coal power plant is not available now we would still buy power from private oil burned power producers for Rs. 35-40 per unit. Just think about the saving per month. Nearly 13 Billion per month. via DM iOS App

I work on a ajor project in Colombo, and we are told to apply "XX Standards with Curry Powder" by our client, who thinks we are too rigourous in asking our contractor to do a decent job, supply proper materials and so on.What we are trying to avoid is the problems like with the coal plant!

"country gets affordable electricity at the right time" oh realy... and how affordable...our rates are almost similar to western countries.... on time...remember the 4 hour power cuts per day era...when r we going to have them again? When was your last paid vacation by the companies who make you do those CEB reports?

Last time when this plant broke down, Engineers and minister are boasting about fixing a cooling mechanism to cool the boiler in a short time when an abnormal shut down happens. What happened to that plan ?.

For those of you who think there is no long term planning in Sri Lanka, please have a look here on how much of meticulous planning is done to ensure country gets affordable electricity at the right time. http://www.ceb.lk/publications/

Commissioned by MR, funded by Chinese loan, built on Chinese technology, with such a record why are we surprised of its regular breakdown....

    Mevan Monday, 17 April 2017 01:43 PM

Commission grabbers are now gone but poor people have to bear the consequences.

    ravin Monday, 17 April 2017 12:45 PM

Always brake down. It is time to think long term than short term plans. All short term plans are good for commission makers only. As a country if we do not get into long term planing we are going to sink deeper and deeper into same hole. We have got enough qualified engineers to do proper assessments and planing rather than getting expatriates to do our work.

    Alig Monday, 17 April 2017 12:43 PM

They forgot the plan because they're too busy daydreaming.
