Foreign Minister Thilak Marapana said today no provable evidence had been filed against former army commander Jagath Jayasuriya to the effect that he committed war crimes in the case filed by an NGO in Brazil recently.
Responding to a question raised by joint opposition MP Dinesh Gunawardane, the minister said this was not a new thing and added that two similar cases had been filed against Sri Lankan security forces by NGOs in the United States and Switzerland in 2011.
He said however the governments in the two countries had withdrawn the cases.
He told parliament that the allegation against Mr. Jayasuriya was not made with good intentions as it was done after he left his position as the army commander and also he left Brazil as its Ambassador.
Referring to the statement made by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, he said it was his personal opinion and that it was not the opinion of the government.
He said the official stance on the matter had been made by President Maithripala Sirisena recently. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Is that not a matter for the courts to decide, if it gets that far that is; and certainly not within the ambit of for a foreign minister to decide.

" PROVABLE EVIDENCE" IS THE BEST POSSIBLE DEFENSIVE STROKE OF VVIPS

The truth of the accusation can be found only (a) an independent investigation is allowed (b) GOSL welcomes the case and cooperates to investigate the issue fully..... however for obvious reasons both will not happen. The FM Marapana typically is singing to the gallery.

no evidence is 'provable' if the case is filed in the banana courts of SL, but this case has been filed in another country and judges will decide if the evidence is provable or not.Our own army commander is ready to give evidence. What more do you want

just because the case was filed after he left the army how do you conclude that the intentions were not good? what is the connection between the time of living the army and intention? I don't see any

Most of our senior Parliamentarians are lawyers, Why dont they understand the about witnesses. If there are not enough witnesses no one can with the case, However Lawyers loose their temper they will loose the case.
