For the first time in the history of the Dimbulagala Forest Monastery, a seven-year-old Muslim boy has been ordained, said Chief Incumbent Millane Siriyalankara Thera.

The Thera said the mother of the boy was abroad and his father Hameed Ismail had brought him to the monastery.

He had been ordained as Rathnapure Siri Sudarshanalankara and resides in the forest monastery along with many Sinhala, Tamil and Veddah children who had entered into Buddha Sasana.

“This is the best precedent for religious harmony and national unity. The Dimbulagala Forest Monastery is the only temple where monks of different ethnicities reside, setting an example not only to all Sri Lankans but also to the entire world,” the Thera said. (Nimal Jayaratne)

What did I learn from reader comments we all are the religious fanatic because when a Muslim boy ordained, why we are taking about Muslim girls marriage issue? This clearly indicates that we are lacking for tolerance towards other faith or community, and this mentality will destroy our country.Remember we all are Sri Lankan, our Religion is our Nation.

    reader Tuesday, 24 January 2017 05:13 PM

@Josh: Buddhists becoming Islam/Christian is a very common thing in this country, mainly for marraige reasons.

the guardian or the father has right to convert the child to any religion nevertheless the father also should have converted.

    Naazir Tuesday, 24 January 2017 01:13 PM

wonder if the mother has given permission to ordain the child. If she is aboard, and the father just brought the child to the temple, wouldn't she be in for a rude surprise when she comes back home.
