Most Sinhalese happy about recent riots: EC

Dismissing the popular view on the attitude of a majority of Sinhalese towards the attacks on Muslim-owned properties and mosques during the recent riots in Ampara town and the Kandy District, Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya claimed they seemed happy about what happened.

"The claim that a majority of Sinhalese were against the recent attacks on Muslims is wrong," he said.

At a workshop on ethnic harmony on the theme, "building Bridges" held on Saturday at SLIDA, Mr. Deshapriya was quick to observe that a majority of Sinhalese were happy to see the Tamils too being attacked in 1983, only to regret it a few years later.

He said embracing some aspects of Arab culture by Muslims in Sri Lanka is fanning fires of distrust while Muslim girls were being further and further pushed into an insulated society since they had been compelled to go to the mushrooming small international schools run by Muslims, as they have no schools to attend.

Mr. Deshapriya urged the Muslims to assimilate themselves into a Sri Lankan nation and reminded the Sinhalese that there is no unmixed community in the country or in the world.

"Didn't the 14,000 people brought by King Gajaba from India father anyone here," he asked.

Mr. Deshapriya said the word "Marakkalaya" and "Hambaya" were derived from the names of the vessels that were used by the early Muslims to come to Sri Lanka and added that in that sense, even King Vijaya was also Marakkala, as he too used that vessel to come to Sri Lanka.

He threw a challenge to the Muslims with a question whether they would invite a Buddhist monk for a lecture in a totally Muslim institution. (M.S.M. Ayub)

Yes Mr.commissioner, you have identify the issue. It is the govt.of the day bring the people to get tp them to live together. In Sri Lanka the govt use communism for their personal gain. Learn from other countries HOW TP LIVE TOGETHER.eg India, China,Singapore,South Africa,Canada and many other countries.are every one to earn and lead a decent life and see the communal will evade.

    Mohamed Tuesday, 20 March 2018 02:59 AM

Dear MR Deshapriya - What you said was perfect - I live overseas and found some of my Sinhalese friend were very happy about but these guy never visited Sri Lanka for last 10-20 years - I belive this something do with inferiority complex and jealousy based on the assumption that Muslims are rich and they control business and dress well - In Gujarath there more than 2500 Muslims were mascaraed but same ethnicity is controlling diamond and gold business in Dubai - Did any one from Dubai Muslim targeted them ? No not at all - They knew its part of their economy and Gujarthi are known for this business and inherits special skills in dealing with the industry. This how Sinhala leaders and and young sinhelese generation should think - HOW TEAM UP WITH SKILLS AND MIND SET TO DEVELOP THE COUNTRY - CHINEES ARE GOOD IN COPYING TECHNOLOGY AND SELL IT FOR CHEAPER PRICE - Does it means you go and burn chiness houses -

Well said Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:36 AM

    Well said

    so true.

    Banda Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:35 PM

Tell me Mr. Mohamed, PEW research says; 75% of Muslims the world over were happy when 'the world trade centre' was blasted with hijacked passenger planes killing hundreds of people and flattened to ground. Why?

Sam Unagolla Tuesday, 20 March 2018 01:51 PM

Mohamed, that is all nice and cuddly... but why do you folks have such huge families. I am no anthropologist, but even I can predict that the huge population growth of muslims is the main reason for this problem. If the Sri Lankan muslims follow family planning conventions, most of the mistrust and fear towards them would dissipate...

Nilanga De Silva Tuesday, 20 March 2018 04:12 AM

Yes. You may be correct Mr Deshapriya. As Sinhalese, our mindset is not developed enough to understand that we have to live in harmony. We say that we have 2500 years of history and culture. Bu,t Sinhala mindset so underdeveloped it is almost primitive. Sri Lankans need to wake to this reality.I live in Australia for the past 30 years. Australia is a good example how people all over the world live in harmony. We must look at those cultures and learn a thing or two.

    Jude Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:52 AM

Remember, Aussie government promoting ONLY Christianity!!

    Reality Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:23 AM

Not only the Sinhala. Others too want to avoid a common Sri Lankan identity

    Vv Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:41 PM

Remember australia is a stolen country from the aborginals. So you cannot compare that to Sri lanka.

    Sira Tuesday, 20 March 2018 01:50 PM

There are communcal violance in Australia too. When a major community is threatened or sme ne want to change it, violence will spill out. This is simple Biology. When SInhalese Buddhist culture is threatened that will happen in SL as well. Muslims are rich because they cheat always. They paly unfairly. All the drug loards are muslims, muslims destry all the forests.. Dont compare the Australian scenario here please, its not the same.

Nilanga De Silva Tuesday, 20 March 2018 04:26 AM

When are we moving away from the Elara - Dutugamunu mindset?

    rajitha7 Tuesday, 20 March 2018 04:29 AM

Everyone becomes spiritual at certain points in life. That means going back to the monotheistic fundamentals for the Muslims. It leaves no room for the non-believers. So the doctrine itself isolates, rouses hate and enmity even among sects within Islam. Muslims should truly consider embracing Buddhism.

    raj Tuesday, 20 March 2018 04:47 AM

no wonder SL is still backwards due to the mentality so called eminent people like EC etc

    Warelephant Tuesday, 20 March 2018 05:15 AM

    Teacher Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:35 PM

It's sad to see how easy it is to brainwash Sri Lankans by simple hate campaigns. Better teach kids how to think than blaming minority ethnic group, or else, no one would be safe.Syria is burning today because people started fire from their tongues, and then everyone's home is burnt!!

    Muslim Tuesday, 20 March 2018 05:46 AM

Well said sir. You have hit tht nail on the head. As for me I have many non Muslim friends (both school mates and others) but not many from my community. I have to say I have only a very few Muslim friends (non relations). What I fail to understand is even if some want to ape Saudi Arabia or any Middle eastern country - at least do away with the black cloaks and get on to more appealing colours. Of course Ladies covering their heads is also stated in other religions. Ofcourse - " the attitude of a majority of Sinhalese towards the attacks on Muslim-owned properties and mosques" also have other reasons as well.

    Tourist Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:09 AM

Can anyone enlighten me as to why from the start the Muslims of Sri Lanka had embraced Tamil as their mother tongue and not the Sinhalese.

    ramesh Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:12 AM

you Joker, that is because Muslims are also Tamils. It is as foolish as asking why the Sinhalese are not Hindus

    city Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:25 AM

Yes,the Muslims from India were Tamil speaking and the Malays were English speaking but embraced Sinhala and Tamil.the Malays were from Malaysia and Indonesia.

    Gihan Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:30 AM

This is idotic, they can speak all languages, most of the people in the township speak sinhala or english, but in villages they speak Tamil, since they have been living with estate Tamils for Long.

    city Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:32 AM

..the Tamil speaking didn't socialize with the Sinhalese as fast as the Malays due to the language and difference in social behavior.it became worse after sinhala was made the official language.

    Gihan Tuesday, 20 March 2018 11:00 AM

Only In Colombo Mulsims speaks English, other town areas Sinhala and Tamil and North and East Tamil only. Most of the Muslim population are from east speaks tamil not because of estate Tamils. Only a few are living in the estates. This is also part of a problem that not all citizens are aware of demography.

Language for business transactions Tuesday, 20 March 2018 11:03 AM

Even before the Portuguese period (of occupation ) for the traders in colombo Tamil was the language.used for business transactions.

Why is this person stoking the dying embers of the fire ..how did he arrive at the conclusion that 'most ' Sinhalese lied what happened ? Any way Hamban is suppose to have been a corruption of the term for the boats SAMPAN ..and Marakkal seems to have come from India ..or who knows Morocco ..that is beside the point ..

    Lanka Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:26 AM

Humans are not a peacefull species, and that is the very same reason humans embrace religions bound by rules. Also there is law to keep people in sequence. So the easy thing to do is implimenting the law properly and comvincingly enough so the people will fear and at the same time gain faith. Its still hard to beleive that the houses and places of worships are burnt to ashes based on sheer hatrad in this civilised world.

    Deshapriya Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:34 AM

Also, Mr deshapriya,Yes we will invite a bhuddist monk to a lecture at a totally Muslim institution. There is absolutely no challenge to us Muslims there. As a matter of fact, monks have been invited to speak at the Muslim Mosques many times. Even in Colombo. There are videos of it as well. Please update yourself! And your claim that majority bhuddists were happy with what happened to the Muslims, that's actually sad. It may be true, but shows that we have no heart. Unfortunately that is a human trait. We seek pleasure in another man's misfortune. That is a major reason why we as a country have still not developed. Also, ultimately who is repairing all the damaged property in those areas now? The army. So the racists that caused all that havoc ultimately are wasting the money and time of the country and the bhuddists themselves. Muslims are ultimately receiving newly built property and a fresh start to life and business. Who are the real losers here?

    Nana Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:10 AM

Its not right, But its the usual human behavior when threatened.

    city Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:28 AM

    Leonard P Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:55 AM

    shairaz Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:57 AM

I agree every one should have basic knowledge about the other religion and culture. For an example, sikhs carry knife, as per their culture. People can give wrong interpretation if they do not understand their culture.

    sayy Tuesday, 20 March 2018 11:04 AM

The problem is SL is a begging bowl from the High to the Low and expect things done for free. If people work hard and do their job in an honest way for the sake of the country, they wont have time to see to what the other person is doing.

    VJ Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:21 AM

I think the EC made a honest observation. Those who indulge in violence cannot be Buddhist. Those who endorse such violence cannot be Buddhist either. The EC has a better view of the voting patterns of our people and especially the majority community. It has always been based on race or religion and not with the intention of chosing a leader. The so called leaders exploit these to their maximum benefit even in modern day Sri Lanka.

    BuffaloaCitizen Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:28 AM

Absolutely true.... it confirms the fact that Sinhalese are still a primitive race failing to grasp the basics of evolution and believing in historical fantasies which make them feel superior, grand, powerful at the cost of the countries future.

    shanthaNE Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:30 AM

He may be correct in saying most sinhalese are happy about what happened. unfortunately by asking muslims to assimilate in to Sri Lankan nation he shows he is also of the view that people with different beliefs should give up their beliefs to accommodate to majority. People should be able to believe and follow whatever they want as long as they do not interfere with other peoples rights.

    shanthapriya Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:35 AM

As a sinhalese i am totally against any harmful act against muslim or any other national . it s a shame that we are having a short sighted elec. commissioner like you

Very disappointing comment from a public official. Mr. Deshapriya shouldn't have made this comment. You are good in your area of expertise. Sadly some of these top civil servants tend to put their foot in the mouth. This is a such instance. Kindly be conscious. One bad comment lead to another. And we all suffer at the end.

    SENA Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:16 AM

"My religion is greater than yours" , "I am superior to you" , "I am from a high caste" - This thinking is the problem. We are in deep shit and for generations, we will be.

If majority of this country choose to wear lingerie only as their traditional dress, do you mean that the muslims also adapt the same? Its shame on you EC. You must understand the fundamental right of a person.
