Medical services in island-wide hospitals come to standstill

Medical services in more than 900 hospitals island-wide, except children’s and maternity hospitals have ground to a halt today due to the token strike launched by doctors against certain budgetary decisions.

Treasurer of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Dr. Nalinda Herath said strike was not carried out at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, de Soysa Maternity Hospital, and Castle Street Hospital for Women, National Cancer Institute, Maharagama and Sirimavo Bandaranayake Specialist Children’s Hospital in Peradeniya.

According to the GMOA, more than 15,000 government doctors are currently involved in the strike. (Piyumi Fonseka)

Government spend more than Rs. 6 million for a doctor under free education from the taxed money, further provide vehicle permit in each 5 years and they not pay income tax honestly from huge income they getting from PP and after all theses Shylock playing with the lives of the helpless people by striking for nothing.. tragedy..

Correction permits are given twice in their career at ten year intervals. And the problem is that money earned from private practise is taxed at 20%. Far higher than the corresponding income bracket. Know your facts before your comment.

Most private clinics don't issue receipts for doctor's fee, only clinic charges...which proberbly means they don't declare that.

This goverment is too democratiic. This politically motivated some selfish leaders, whose idea is to topple the government by misleading the public, by interrupting the serveices and trying hard to make the Government unpopular. Their idea is to create problems in the country by doing so. Now every one is enjoying freedom. These so called leaders could not bearup that.They misuse the freedom. To develop this country the rulers should take stern action against them when and where it is necessary, for the sake of the majority of innocent people.
