The Government will, within two months, introduce legislation to enforce the recycling of garbage, informed sources said yesterday.

They said the Prime Minister was monitoring the progress of the new Bill, which is now under preparation.

“Sri Lanka is one of the few countries in Asia that does not have specific laws pertaining to recycling of garbage and therefore the government has decided to introduce laws pertaining to this issue,” a source said adding that this matter was being expedited in the aftermath of the Meethotamulla tragedy which killed more than 30 people. This was Introduced some time back too, and it was not adhered to, Be strict on this, educate the people the Importance of this, and if not adhered to impose heavy fines, as we all should cooperate as you need two hands to clap.

Just requesting without a law to back it is useless. Good to introduce new laws and punish the offenders. People will never learn otherwise. Need some quick solution to this burning issue.

Is the President and PM living in Lanka or some other country, cause they don't know if their coming or going. President is having commission after commission. PM is selling the country lock stock and barrel. Not one decent decision of National minded thinking so far by these two leaders. They are robbing the peoples monies in front of our eyes and we can't see it. Earlier they did it behind our backs. That's the difference in educated thieves

Colombo Municipality should control the breeding and spread of mice and larger rodents in sewers and city so that perishable garbage can be composted within properties even in a small way.

Another law, another set of fines, another bunch of corruption opportunities that will come from it.And what happens to the separated rubbish anyway?Does it end up in the same place as the rest? And what happens when the collectors, who already demand money from householders to collect, while being paid by their employers, don't show up anyway?

    concern Saturday, 22 April 2017 06:58 PM

Yes the law was there but the issue was only one garbage truck collects. They empty the containers to this one. What is the idea having separate containers?

The prime minister is running around the world saying he wants to make Sri Lanka the Hub of this and that whereas we even cannot dispose our own garbage.

    AR Sunday, 23 April 2017 05:52 PM

Need awareness raising, systems and procedures in place that will ensure sustainability and scalability of this initiative. HH level disposal and HH level collection are needed to allow recycling. Countries are making millions with recycling.
