The Government would institute legal action against parents who did not send their children to school, Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorale said yesterday.

The Minister said school education was compulsory to students from Grade 1 to Grade 13.

“School education has been made mandatory from Grade 1 to 13. We think it would come to effect this year or next year.

“However, the there are laws under which the government can file legal action against parents if they failed to send their children to school,” the Minister said at an event in Embilipitiya. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

    lkboy Tuesday, 09 October 2018 05:09 PM

Please dear Minister...., seriously this is over-looked for many years!!! Appreciate if this is implemented 'straight-off' instead! Thanks a mil!

Dear Minister Why do you want to take additional headache and wasteyour time. First concentrate on the special courts whether it is functioning or sleeping

    ram Tuesday, 09 October 2018 01:43 PM

Hon. Minister, Can you make sure that the parents get basic need to survive before they send their child to school. How can you expect a child attend school with starving, without the basic need like books, writing instruments, slippers etc.

Please find the route cause for this. sometimes, due to their poverty, they may be unable to send their Children to School. For example, SHOES are expensive and they are not durable, BUS fair is expensive, FOOD/snacks is expensive. Sometime both parents may be working; hence has no one/no time pick them from school. Secondly, STOP children being employed as SERVANTS by wealthy people including politicians.

It is good. But will they go for cultivation, farming and other manual jobs after education. In long run there wont be people to do these jobs.

In China, Japan, Korea etc farmers are well educated thus they can use modern tech for Agriculture

    Unchikun Tuesday, 09 October 2018 02:22 PM

What about looters, adductors, rapists and murders?

    vithura Tuesday, 09 October 2018 04:19 PM

A valid point, education alone does not make a good person, rather teaching of moral values and discipline mainly at home, would. I am afraid, schools these days are places where students are taught to pass exams and just that.

    CITIZEN Tuesday, 09 October 2018 02:48 PM

Yes, this is the Priority No. 1! Special Courts set up to hear and decide on the high profile cases seem to be no better than existing courts. Don't they occupy any priority in your actions? Everything seems to be All Talk and No Work (ATNW)!!!

Legal action also needs to be taken against teachers who skip school to give private tuition.

    Anura Tuesday, 09 October 2018 04:15 PM

    Well said Anton

    Skeptic Tuesday, 09 October 2018 04:19 PM

Can you also look into international schools. They don't seem to come under anyone and are a law unto themselves.

    Stan Wednesday, 10 October 2018 01:54 PM

They are private schools registered with the ministry of education as educational institutions

    vithura Tuesday, 09 October 2018 04:27 PM

If anything, with modern technology, we should aim to take education to the children, than the other way around. Every opportunity is a learning opportunity and with kids of these days being very comfortable in the use of technology and internet together with its added flexibility, they will take to online or distant learning like ducks to water.

Instead of using discussions and persuasions if the law is allowed to creep into more and more of personal and family aspects of life then Sri Lanka would become a paranoid and sick society like in the West.

    Chris Tuesday, 09 October 2018 05:51 PM

Before taking legal action against parents please see that children have basic necessities to attend school. Clothes, shoes, stationary and proper nutrition.

    mohan Tuesday, 09 October 2018 05:58 PM

compulsory 1 to Grade 13. ? how about student who did not succeed in o/l ?

    MRN Tuesday, 09 October 2018 06:30 PM

How about taking action against the principals, even the ministry officials who encourage to slap 2-3 weeks suspension of children for minor mischievousness. Recently we complained to NCPA, Education Ministry, Director of Education but nothing happened.

this is the only thing this lady said so far.still did not do it.so wait and see this also a lie or not.

    Palugaswewa Wednesday, 10 October 2018 08:48 AM

Hurrah, this is another set of empty words that will remain in the Govt.Gazette without implementation.
