Legal action against 4 eateries at Olcott Mawatha

Legal action has been taken on four eateries operating at Olcott Mawatha in Fort after a raid carried out by officials of the Colombo Municipality’s Health Department. They have charged with violating food safety regulations.

Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Subash Mendis of the Municipality’s Food Hygiene and Safety Unit said 12 hotels were inspected during the raid carried out on Wednesday.

“Owners of 10 eateries selling food in a unhygienic condition, were reprimanded while the owners of two eateries agreed to close them down for two days. Cases were filed against four eateries,” he told Daily Mirror.

More than 200kg of food items including kottu, plain roti, eggs and curries found unsuitable for human consumption were destroyed during the raid.

Dr. Mendis said more raids would be carried out under the instructions of the Municipality’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni during the next two weeks to nab errant vendors and eateries. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

I lived in Japan for a few decades and in Japan if a shop is found to sell food unfired for consumption it is closed for a long period of time (months I guess) and a notice is posted on the entrance giving the reason for the closure. Why not in Sri Lanka.

Because in sri lanka we have a very weak inefficient corrupted state sector where these medical officers visit and give a charge sheet then go away. No permanent solution.

Why not check eateries in Colombo suburbs as well? It is a full time job. Enroll more officers and train them to check periodically. The food is substandard and quality has come down drastically over last several years. Define what lunch or dinner rice packet should contain and the minimum quantity of curries. Declare proper pricing for various curries by agreement to its values.

The problem is that customers are unwilling to pay a reasonable price for the food. They expect good quality, good service by trained staff but do not want to pay anything. A rice and curry of good quality with a good service can not be sold under Rs 300 to get a reasonable profit.

Even the reputed restaurants toilets are not clean and staff cooking the food not following proper procedures, they are not clean, never use gloves and stuff......

Pleas inspect the eateries along the Beaches, including Kalkuda, Pasikuda etc,etc. Further please see that the cooks have minimum qualification. If these are not in place ,pass necessary Bills in the parlment. Foreign tourists have made very adverse comments about these eateries.
