Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara today said they would seek legal action against the organisers of cycle race events if any fatal accident occurred during the races because of backup vehicles.

SP Gunasekara said that several road accidents occur during the festive season due to the carelessness of the backup vehicles including motorcycles which travel alongside cyclists.

He requested the event organisers not to allow motorcycles to travel with cyclists in order to prevent accidents. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Typical Sri Lanka. Wait until some one dies before any action is taken. If someone dies it is illegal. No death no problem!!!

Yes please. this is much needed. Those accompanying motorcyclists are a dangerous menace, it is high time some action is taken, and i hope this wont be limited to words.

Ban motor cycles accompanying cyclists. They are a menace for the cyclists. They should have a pilot vehicle a medical vehicle and a backups for fallouts. What do we have instead? About 5 mobikes per cyclist with monkeys showing off their full face helmets.

Crowded Sri Lankan roads are not suitable for bicycle races.

Please take immediate actions for this "public cruelty". People cannot use the road when there is this so called cycle race, road has become a play ground.

Also stop schools from having nuisance rallies on the road. Half the children are dangling out of vehicles. And roads are blocked. Such a stupid practice.

Good decision . Backup riders behave like owners of the road. Not only that racers need to be advised to use only their side lane. races need to be held without any disturbance to others.

Before taking them to task for careless cycling, first of all let us know whether you have issued instructions or guidelines how to conduct them with care?

This law should be implemented even when some schools have their "Big matches "

The people who escort the racers (who usually go on mobikes) even shout in filth at the other drivers (especially during Aurudu season). This is not really good.

Well done... much needed action to ensure the safety of the others on the road ...Some times the race looks more like a motor cycle or 3 wheel vehicle race....
