Japanese firm withdraws from third stage construction of the Central Expressway

The Japanese firm which was to be given the contract to carry out the third stage of the Central Expressway is said to have withdrawn, thus compelling the government to search for another construction company.

The expressway is to be constructed in three stages with the contract for the first stage from Kadawata to Mirigama awarded to a Chinese company and the second stage to Kurunegala via Potuhera awarded to a local contractor.

Under the third stage, the expressway will stretch from Potuhera to Kandy.

When asked about the progress made into the work on the third stage, Highways and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella said a new contractor would be found after the Japanese contractor withdrew after five months of negotiation.

“There are proposals from several companies. We will finalize the contractual process in due course,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Which local company got one part? Is that company owned by a minister based in Ampara?

The withdrawel of the Japs leave a bad taste. Wonder if it is about "something"

What a debacle! Now award to an Indian company with inferior quality. Just give it to the Chinese.

    kumaran Tuesday, 18 October 2016 01:59 AM

WHY? Why did they "withdraw" ? After five months of negotiating?!! Typical. We earn a very bad name.

This one stinks- independent investigation required for reasons why the Jap firm pulled out. Where relatives of the minister are acting as private secretaries to the minister, main reason is confidentiality as dealing and wheeling goes on. All ministers who have relatives working for them as private secretaries or cabinet directors must be investigated for corruption.

Please give it to Chinese state engineering coperation. Pioneers in road construction in Asia. They win most international tenders due to low cost but good standard

if a local company can construct one part of the motorway which means they are good at it. so why not give the whole bleeding lot to them rayther than 3 different companies. where is the logic in awarding to three different companies. are we missing something here.

    Humaiz Tuesday, 18 October 2016 04:25 PM

Am i the only one who is interested that one part was given to the local constructor. This will help the money not going out of the country.
