Students of the University of Jaffna have started a boycott for five days over the solution suggested by President Maithripala Sirisena during a discussion held regarding the political prisoners.
The students had decided to boycott lectures till October 25.
The fourth year examinations, which were scheduled to be held today, were also cancelled by the University administration due to the boycott.
The Jaffna University Students Federation called a discussion this morning regarding the President’s solutions on political prisoners.
Following the discussion the students decided to boycott lectures.
The President had assured to provide a solution by October 25 and the Students Federation had decided to continue their action until that day.
The Union also said, if the President failed to provide a permanent solution, the students would continue their protest as hunger strike. (Romesh Madushanka)

Neglecting education, Then many Hartal's and when there is a economic impact, no wonder they get on boats as economic migrants and claim asylum as political. All self inflicted. Protest After work and Education.

This logic is absurd. On one hand ex-LTTE members are freed. On the other hand alleged war crimes done by the legitimate security forces are probed. Does it imply that people should have joined the LTTE and not the army?

proof it in a court of law and imprison them if guilty, but don't keep them as remand prisoner for years.
poda pandi Friday, 20 October 2017 08:39 PM
@raj. Correct, but they were never political prisoners. They were suspected terrorists.

In vain the students are wasting their precious time by involving in unrelated political matters. Leave politics for politicians and you take care of you studies.I thought those in the north are different but they are like their counterparts in the south. Please don't ruin your future give priority to your studies.

who had done crimes against humanity, such as massacring civilians, killing infants, blasting bus loads of innocents by land mines should not consider as political prisoners, but their cases take as soon as possible and punish them according to the rule of the land considering the time they already spend behind the bars.
Dr.Raghav Friday, 20 October 2017 04:58 PM
It means you have already decided that all were criminals without trail?

I am a Jaffna Tamil retired Account. What is happening in the Jaffna university,is same like in the South, the result of FREE EDUCTION in Sri Lanka. Actually there are no middle class Tamil students in th Jaffna University, the cream of the Tamil society has left Jaffna permanently because of the LTTE, Indian Army, and the Sri Lankan Army.

Totally disgusting, it is absurd to keep any one in prison without framing any charges.Democratic setup provides the opportunity for all to prove guilty or not guilty through the legal procedures.I doubt DM may publish my comment.

Why last nine years no charges brought against the remand prisoners. SL is the only country in the world where prisoners are kept without a charge in the prison. Can we put the politicians behind bars for ten years at least withour a charge. Shall we try it please?

Dr. Raghav. Why talk of democracy when you were either silent or supportive of the LTTE who were killing innocent Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims etc.? You must be thankful that you Tamils in the North now have the freedom to express your thoughts unlike in Prabhakaran's time.
