What was wrong in obtaining a degree from a private university if it was permissible for the medical students to enter State universities by attending to private tuition classes, Welfare Minister S. B. Dissanayake said today.

Social Empowerment and Welfare Minister S. B. Dissanayake told a media briefing that the students who were not eligible to enter State universities could obviously have the ability to obtain a degree through private universities, with the aid of a scholarship or a loan scheme.

“The students who are struggling on the roads against the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) on the roads had studied at private tuition classes during Advance Level (A/L) by paying money,” he said.

He said he would give his complete support to establish more private medical universities in Sri Lanka like the SAITM if any investor would be interested in doing so. (Kalathma Jaywardhane)

They foresee only issue is political to upset present govt. U dont see reason when they pay for tuition and enter Uni but preclude others to pay thereafter and get higher education. To check standard let them sit exam.

again trying to fool general public? if you know the difference between mouth and back side you will know the difference between tuition and SAITM .

    Gamarala Thursday, 09 February 2017 05:11 PM

For the first time I can that stay SB spoke well and to the point, well said!

    Dot Thursday, 09 February 2017 04:34 PM

The Minister has the power to liberate the Parent from the ordeal of private tuition . I cannot see how relevant of his rebuttal and the link he has drawn as a Political leader .Do not blame the Parents and the students who spent their household income on this added expenses of tuition unacceptable but needed to do it the hard way to get that extra mark ..spend so much time on the road after classes taking risks and with no quality time with family . .Blame the Leaders of the time and your colleagues too who are still not doing anything to address the situation .

All private and state medical college students and foreign medical graduates should set common examination. It should be final year examination of the Colombo or Peradeniya Universities. These two universities are oldest universities in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Siva Thursday, 09 February 2017 11:44 AM

This educated Hon. minister could not understand that the AL exam is common for all and conducted by government, SAITM is having their own exams to qualify students study there. That is the reason SLMC and GMOA is struggling to get them to a common level of knowledge and training as per the accepted Sri Lankan standards.

    Hear hear!!

    ST Thursday, 09 February 2017 08:29 AM

This is system is not valid to Sri Lanka, all of crooks kith and kin will become doctors like someone who passed with the highest mark in law college. Might be SB has the future plan.

Tax Payer Thursday, 09 February 2017 08:23 AM

They are the future doctors, gonna protest for duty free vehicles and admission in famous schools for their children by jeopardizing the lives of poor.

    Public Thursday, 09 February 2017 08:19 AM

Our education system needs to be changed so that no child gets left behind. Resources should be diverted to those struggling students and at the same time create a competitive atmosphere. We need to turn every student into a highly productive asset for the work force.

    Bala Thursday, 09 February 2017 08:03 AM

But pposing paying Unis while not campaigning for abolition of private tuition by GMOA shows double standard when they benefit then payment is OK but to protect their territory from others - payment education is no good.

    Sofia Thursday, 09 February 2017 07:59 AM

Perfect and very reasonable comparison if you understand logic.

    Bala Thursday, 09 February 2017 07:58 AM

SLMC are all former GMOA members and so dog does not bite dog but go along together - sun or rain.

    SL Wednesday, 08 February 2017 08:16 PM

Come on man, arrange a proper guideline and monitoring system so as quality doctors will be passed out from SAITEM. do you have it? no,then stop barking !If current medical students are so greedy ,they'd have stay inside the universities and do their studies. Some how they foresee an issue,so they protests

    Rajasinghe Thursday, 09 February 2017 07:20 AM

Most of the time I do not agree with you. However in this instance you are perfectly correct Mr.Minister. Those who oppose SAITAM are afraid of their previlages. WE NEED MORE SAITAMs.Those who oppose are still living in 18th century.

ENG - GEB Fernando Thursday, 09 February 2017 06:30 AM

SB Dissanayake needs to get some " tution " in higher education it seems! As long as the suitably qualified students are enrolled and the staff and facilities are OK it should be fine.

    Malith Thursday, 09 February 2017 06:23 AM

Nothin else we can hope from these type of ministers.... via DM Android App

    dot Thursday, 09 February 2017 05:51 AM

Private tuition was never OK .not in this manner of mega after school classes sponging on the income of the vulnerable ..This system of Private Tuition came about due to a climate of anxiety created in the minds of Parents to seek a way out and gain a front place in the competitive style of weeding out exam system carried forward from Colonial times and the loop holes that could be manipulated to get front rank .Never changed although everyone condemned !...so two wrongs wont make a right... Never give up hope if you have the will to do so !

    Wijebahu Thursday, 09 February 2017 04:49 AM

Have you read SAITM has asked many times to offer sit for COMMON EXAMS. GOMAS and SLMC has refuced that fearing they will do good.

    K Perera Wednesday, 08 February 2017 09:57 PM

    Everything SB said is correct!

German Jacob Wednesday, 08 February 2017 09:12 PM

    Very good slap to Bandula

Kiis Baba Amaray Wednesday, 08 February 2017 09:10 PM

Sometimes, Minister SB talks very wisely.

Desmond Jeromme Wednesday, 08 February 2017 09:09 PM

SB's cross question is very reasonable. Good question Sir.

    dilip Wednesday, 08 February 2017 08:53 PM

No point blaming the minister. Some of them will do and say any thing for profits.Only the people who voted for them should be shot.

    concern Wednesday, 08 February 2017 08:41 PM

    What a stupid comparison

    aravinda Wednesday, 08 February 2017 08:26 PM

It is the medical council that blocks SAITM achieving the quality because, MC fears that they will loose their monopoly in profession if doctors are graduated from other institutions.
