House approves motion to increase judges' salaries

A motion to increase the salaries of the Chief Justice and Supreme Court and Appeal Court judges was unanimously passed in Parliament without a debate.

House Leader Lakshman Kiriella inquired into the possibility of approving the motion and joint opposition MP Bandula Gunawardane said his group was agreeable. No objections were raised from the other opposition groups as well.

The motion states that the pensionable allowance of the mentioned judicial officers would be increased by up to 50 per cent of their salary with effect from January 1, 2018 while a monthly professional allowance of Rs.150,000 considered for pension purposes would replace the special non pensionable monthly allowance of Rs.15,000 paid earlier.

Although the usual procedure followed in Sri Lanka is that the MP's salaries are automatically increased when salaries of judicial officers are increased, it would have to be done through a separate motion, apparently expected to be brought in with regard to the MP's. Most of the judges don't have degree in srilanka .They become judges passing general exam in srilankan Law college. And they are not thinkers

Another move to increase the salaries of parliamentarians!!! This is disgusting. People in outskirts don't have water to drink, fertilizer to grow their crops and these yakkos keep increasing their salaries and perks!! How long are we going to tolerate this??????

Please decrease their salary .They are not like engineers or doctors.they just pass a genrelknowle exam at Srilankan law college at the beginning to become judges. They don't need high salary.

Yes it is a good decision. But they must work more hours and expedite the cases speedily. specially the land cases.Most of the land cases takes a very long peiod. Why not charge a special fee and finish up these cases within a time frame.

Disgusting now the cases will drag even longer since the judges don'thave to work anymore. They should be given a basic salary say 25000 and given bonuses per case finished that is the way it should be . I wonder when thepeople are going to realize that democracy does not work
