The Joint Opposition (JO) today said electing both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker from the same political party-the United National Party-was against the principles of the National Government concept.

JO MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said the basic agreement of the National Government was to appoint the Speaker from the UNP and the Deputy Speaker from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

“Today it has been changed. Therefore, we request the Govt. to take off the so called ‘National Government’ label at least now, since there is no such thing today. Today, SLFP Ministers had become stakeholders of the UNP,” he told a news briefing. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

You scuttled the very National Government concept, fearing MR and even pulled out of the government, after being sworn in as Minister. People are more wiser and their memory is good. Reform and be a good man, as we know you.

    Bala Wednesday, 06 June 2018 04:09 PM

Whydo not you just FO intead off JO.

    Sofia Wednesday, 06 June 2018 04:12 PM

Better to have one bull pulling than two bulls pulling in different directons. So let UNP do wht they can instead of SLFP pullng their leg.

Kumara Dharmarathne Wednesday, 06 June 2018 04:16 PM

Since you were against the national government from the inception, you have no right to criticize or praise about the appointment of Deputy speaker. You guys have already become jokers who don't do a thing to the country. Good Bye.

    palitha Wednesday, 06 June 2018 04:26 PM

if SLFP which is the partner in the national govt. is not worried what is your problem

Yes, SLFP is not atall bothered whether their man or UNP man appointed as Deputy Speaker, only stray dogs are barking.

Hon. MP even don't know the deputy Speaker was elected by voting in the parliament.

    channa Wednesday, 06 June 2018 04:37 PM

An SLFP member was appointed as the deputy leader. He has not removed by UNP. He said he is not interested and vacated the post.

It’s better than having one brother as a minister, one as a defense secretary, one as the Speaker and son as minister by your king

    ja Wednesday, 06 June 2018 06:49 PM

As usual this guy from JO is clearly trying his best to create more problems. One thing, it is none of their business. The second is the deputy speaker slot was for a MP from the SLFP group that supports the National Government concept. Not for the SLFP ers like JO guys who are not supporting the unity govt.

Buddhi Perera Wednesday, 06 June 2018 06:55 PM

Why are you (JO) worried about it?

    S.T.M. Jabeer (Attorney-at-Law) Thursday, 07 June 2018 08:51 AM

This is none of their business, let those fellows (JO) get lost.

Arjuna Ranawana Wednesday, 06 June 2018 09:29 PM

Mean ? that you have accepted the "Yahapalanaya" .On the other hand what happened yours supported candidature?

    Thanga Thursday, 07 June 2018 07:58 AM

The 16 MPs who are sitting in the opposition benches are no more members of the SLFP. They ceased to be part of the national government If Sirisena was serious he should have nominated someone who is still with the SLFP. But nobody was prepared to be nominated since they are not willing to forego their Ministers/Deputy Ministers/State Ministers portfolios. Hence UNP was right in fielding a candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker.

    joshua Thursday, 07 June 2018 08:21 AM

not only the deputy speaker, having 225 odd morons in Parliament means no Government in this country. As someone said JO should be abbreviated as FO

    S. Seeni Mama Sirisena Thursday, 07 June 2018 08:49 AM

Hay Yapa, this is the business between UNP and SLFP, why you good for nothing party of JO struggling for this minor issue.

Palitha Galapitiya Thursday, 07 June 2018 10:12 AM

Their(JO) trumpet web page said that they will win at secret vote and will teach a lesson to the UNP. Ultimately, Sudharshni lost and SLFP could not find a candidate.

    janathawa Thursday, 07 June 2018 11:29 AM

Yapa looks not a veteran other than a baby politician, He doesn't know that it is nothing to do with any principals or concept of the govnmnt, it has been an open election where it has been elected and not nominated and also does not know the difference, so much muttering rot and why they could not field one of their candidate other than now facing media to talk fowl.......
