The Government has decided to get public opinion on the Interim Report of the Steering Committee on Constitution making via online.

Sources from the Prime Minister's office told the Daily Mirror that the Facebook and a number of other websites would be used for this purpose.

“Opinion of the public would be sought through web comments and postings on Facebook pages,” sources said.

They said Sri Lanka would become the first country in the Asia Pacific region to do so.

Officials, who called this exercise as Online Referendum, said the process of gathering public opinion online would be done when the debate on the new Constitution ends on Wednesday. (Yohan Perera)

Though many may not have access to internet facility, it's indeed a welcome move.

Also may use SMS. Jilmarters will fight hard to deviate the outcome.

Another knock on the poorer segment of society. Why not stick to the cocktail circuit in Colombo since they seem to be only ones living in paradise (no pun intended).

Some form of opinion gathering is good, of course with other method to garner opinions of internet inaccessible.

Sri Lanka's online population is less than one third of it's adult population. Also it is mainly concentrated among youth. So we can get opinion of one segment of the society through online.

We are waiting for the digital baloon.

    p nonis Monday, 06 November 2017 06:52 AM

This is a fraudulent way of getting away with it. This is not democracy everyone in srilanka doesn't have face book or internet facilities.

    Hemantha Monday, 06 November 2017 09:08 AM

This is a bias sample and will not represent the opinion of the general public.

    sam Monday, 06 November 2017 11:50 AM

No way hold a proper referendum

    Ranjith Monday, 06 November 2017 12:57 PM

Should have a similar referendum on SIATAM issue as well !

    Senewi Monday, 06 November 2017 01:27 PM

You can not rely on online method to get public opinion as it can be manipulated with computer 'Jil marats"

    anura Monday, 06 November 2017 06:11 PM

This is another Yahapalana trick to white wash the constitution problems by a ridiculous plan to use the computer to see the public opinion. This clearly shows the ignorance of yahapalana politicos about average srilankan people. We need a proper referendum. Not 'Asbandum'
