Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today the government was attempting to remove his name from all constructions named after him.

Following are several questions and answers exchanged between a journalist and Mr. Rajapaksa, when the latter visited the Homagama Purana Temple to pay his last respects to the late Ven. Madowita Pagnakiththi Thera who was the Chief Sanghanayake of the Seenadhi Siu Koralaya.

Q - Is there a plan to remove the pavilion at the Galle International Cricket Stadium named after you?

A - The main issue with this government is my name. It is not an issue if it removes my name from the stadium, but it is in the process of removing Mahindodaya Technical Laboratories set up in schools.

Q - The President tells us not to lose the democracy we enjoy today and shed tears later.

A - Yes, democracy is overflowing these days.

Meanwhile, MP Bandula Gunawardene who also expressed his views on this occasion said the person who saved the country was now not having any regard from the government. (K. Buddhika Kumarasiri and Priyantha Jayalath)

Laws should be enacted to make it illegal for anything to be named after a living person. Any construction namedposthumously after a person is dead should be allowed.

What's problem Mr. Rajapaksa. Do you build these with your own money? Or were they built with loans for which the citizens of this country and their children and children's children will be paying back for generations to come? What's the disease that you and the Bandaranaike's have and had to grab anything and everything paid for by other people's money and put your family names on it? Is it a disease or something in the water that makes the minds work like this? Should we rename Sri Lanka as Rajapaksadveepa? Lee Kuan Yew built Singapore from nothing into a First World Nation and there is no airport or harbour or stadium names after him. If you go there and educate yourself you will find university scholarships and public policy institutions named after him. Nothing more. No big ego projects named after him. AND, please go there an educate yourself about the incorruptible way he ran the country. Today, every single member of the Singapore Cabinet is a Ph.D or M.Sc, or MBA.

If MR was elected for the 3rd time he would have changed the name of country to RAJAPAKSALANTHAYA and convinced the villagers now it is like INGALANTHAYA.

Definitely all political names must be erased from public property. To be fair to the former president, I will erect with my own money a statue of MR in Anuradhapura facing north of Sri lanka. A grim reminder for people of Sri Lanka the era when we saved ourselves from partitioning the land. That does not mean I condone his actions in the past when he robbed the country.
