Govt. pressing for Ravi's resignation

8 August 2017 07:54 am - 32     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

In the face of a no-confidence motion against Foreign Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake, the government is reported to be urging him to step down rather than face defeat in a vote.

After the motion was handed over by the joint opposition, government members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) decided to vote in favour of the motion seeking to unseat the minister while a section of the United National Party (UNP) had also decided not to support him if it came to a vote.

Against this backdrop, government leaders believe that it would be humiliating to the entire government if the minister was unseated through a parliamentary process.

Informed sources said both President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had asked the minister to resign.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has called for a party leaders’ meeting today to discuss future business of the House. JO parliamentary group leader Dinesh Gunawardane said he would seek a date at today’s meeting to debate the no-confidence motion against Minister Karunanayake.

However, according to reports the government is determined to push the minister to resign without leaving room for a vote on the motion. (Kelum Bandara)

Juliano Alwis Tuesday, 08 August 2017 09:07 AM

Why Ravi ? Its the PM and President who is responsible for appointing Arjuna Mahendran a non national as Governor. They should resign first .

r.k. will resign temporarily and will be reappointed similar to t.m.

    Mercedes Tuesday, 08 August 2017 09:24 AM

RK in MS regime is the same as Basil in MR regime. Both have the similar answer "I don't know" when caught red handed.

Ronnie Bugger Tuesday, 08 August 2017 09:26 AM

The President through his intelligence network knew in advance about all this, that is why a cabinet reshuffle took place in order to reduce the impact to the Government.. The Minister must go before he is removed which will be even more painful. "He who flies high will fall, nor gracefully but with a thud."

Freddy Yang Tuesday, 08 August 2017 09:42 AM

The President and the Prime Minister must add the Minister of Law and Order also to the go home list. He is incapable to bring law and order even to a unruly batch of Montessori kids.

It is disgusting to see how the P.M and the President and some others are so nice to a man who was caught red handed with unaccounted money whereas Mr. Saman Kumara did not get such treatment and quite rightly so. This shows the sheer hypocrisy of our politicians and the blatant inequality and discrimination. This country is being systematically wrecked from within by the politicians who come to power promising to clean up the mess. It now at a point where people have lost confidence in the country. Ask 100 young people including the educated what their goal is and 90% will say "to get out of this country" even in a leaky boat.

All culprits should be punished it be Bond Scam, Apartment, Spare Parts, Daisy Palace, Drugs, what ever it be. Any one covering crooks too should be dealt with.

    shanthapriya Tuesday, 08 August 2017 10:00 AM

If Mr ravi steps down ,Dear PM and president please do not appoint a defeated candidate from the national list to his post

    truth Tuesday, 08 August 2017 10:06 AM

How about tax cheaters with cooked up expenses on accounts?

    shanthapriya Tuesday, 08 August 2017 10:07 AM

its wrong to remove Mr Ravi till it is proved he has committed this fraud. If Mr ravi will be removed what about other SLFP ministers who had inked to this deal. What about PM and the President who appointed Mr Mahendran, they too must go home including UNP ministers who tried to safeguard him.

    Premalal Tuesday, 08 August 2017 11:20 AM

Mr. Saman Kumara of the EPF department was interdicted for among other things being unable to account for his wealth and allegedly dumping P.T bonds on the EPF..Can R,K account for his wealth? On your logic you would have to free all alleged criminals until they are found guilty by our courts. Do you know how long a simple court case take? Do you know that smart lawyers can stretch the length of proceedings like rubber. Wasim Thadjudeens remains were exhumed over two years ago and they are still trying to locate them. I hope you get the drift.

The entire nation was in a shock when he was appointed as the Finance Minister

    sy Tuesday, 08 August 2017 12:24 PM

Why not have the no confidence motion in spite of his resignation. That will give the complete picture.

    Sara Tuesday, 08 August 2017 02:02 PM

Ask him to resign and appoint him as the Speaker Of the House like JRJ Style.!!!!!!!

    sincere Tuesday, 08 August 2017 02:05 PM

Do not expect to white wash this crime by only removing Ravi. All rogues, both in the past and in the present must be taken to task. Looking at the caliber of those who are ready with stones in their hands to cast on Ravi, they have forgotten that there are skeletons in their cupboards also. But still the general public is aware of them well.

People will never forget looting of the country.

    Citizen Tuesday, 08 August 2017 02:37 PM

Buggers who did not even whisper a word when the KING was in power, now making all sort of nonsense comments and instruction to President and PM... If so, why don't you all go and work as advisers to the government? System will run by itself no matter what happens...

    Gansh Tuesday, 08 August 2017 02:43 PM

Why should the government press him who is being blamed by everybody so he himself must politely tender his resignation and boldly face the charges and prove his innocence if hr is clean as Mr Thilak Marapane did as a through gentleman .The PM must be tough with administration of his party people .If he can warn Ranjan ,why can not he take action against his men like Vijedasa who promotes anti minority sentiments openly .
