The government today denied any move to increase the salaries of ministers and MPs in the guise of increasing salaries of Supreme Court and Appeal Court judges.
Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and State Minister of Highways Dilan Perera informed the House last evening.
Mr. Rajapaka said the salaries of judges are increased under Section 108(1) of the Constitution whereas salaries of MPs have to be increased under Section 68(1) of the Constitution.
However, MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara said it is natural for anyone to suspect that salaries of MPs would be increased when salaries of judges are increased as both are considered equal when it comes to remuneration. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

The public will not oppose a salary increase for our hardworking and honest Minsters and MPs. Suggest they be provided with a light aircraft too for local travel. These are needed in the bustling economy.

These ministers are so poor that they want salary increases. Imagine the ordinary worker who gets a salary of 15,000/- to 20,000/- how are they managing - are these people rich that their salaries should not be increased. Poor ministers - they can't afford to travel by bus because their salaries are so small.

Did not the PM say that the salaries of the MPs are to be increased as they are working very hard, and also they be provided with luxury vehicles in view of much travel they have to do !

Why would MPs need salaries anyway? Salaries are peanuts for them.
