The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) today threatened to resort to major trade union action next week if its demands with regard to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) in Malabe were not addressed.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge told a media briefing that the GMOA took this decision following the unanimous approval of its Central Committee.

He said the GMOA would inform President Maithripala Sirisena and other relevant authorities to intervene in the matter in the coming days.

“The Court of Appeal on Tuesday directed the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to register medical degree holders of the SAITM. It was the result of Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne’s irresponsible behaviour and his SAITM-biased stand,” he alleged.

He said the timely need was to secure the patients' lives and added that the GMOA would stand to protect their lives at any cost. He also said nobody would prefer to get treated by a doctor whose standard was questionable.

He said the health minister should amend his attitude towards this matter; “We will give a week's time to all these authorities to provide us with a solution. On the other hand, we have complete faith on the judicial system that it would not allow to legalize an institute which has being disapproved by the SLMC,” he added.

Meanwhile, GMOA media spokesman Dr. Naveen de Soyza said discussions were ongoing among several internationally recognized institutes and the GMOA on this matter.

He said they would create a strong force to fight against this matter and added that discussions would be held with state university students, parents and several unions during this week. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

Protecting the patients? are you representing the patients? or protecting your greed?

    Biased Saturday, 04 February 2017 10:38 PM

People who go to SAITM go there because of their money. Of course there are bright students in SAITM but Those is government med schools are the best of the best, and that's why They got in without money. What kind of a doctor has to pay to get their medical degree? If they really deserved the degree, they would've gotten in via A/L, not because of MONEY

...It seems that majority here believe that bringing indian doctors to sri lanka will teach our dictors a 'good lesson'. Let me tell you something. Let them bring doctors from india. Those indian doctors have undergone a stupendious 3 year 'mbbs' course in wooden sheds that they call medical faculties (there are dozens of thise in a single indian town...just like our tution classes here). Let them replace us here. You think that will somehow threaten us. Make us poorer or something. Wrong....we can easily go abroad and live a much better life. There is a global recognition for Sri Lankan doctors for their standards....a reputation that sri lankans will loose in the future owing to institutes like SAITM....

Amazing! All the comments are in favour of SAITM and none against. I don't want to comment on this issue one way or the other because I don't know all the facts regarding SAITM and why the Medical Council refused to register its students, but it is statistically impossible for all the comments to be for SAITM and none against. Obviously the Daily Mirror is publishing only favourable comments.and not the others. I wonder why?

Enough is enough!!! Government should stop all these nonsense and take stern action regarding this. One thing they are hassling the public and other our hard earned money wasting time on roads. They should have more PMC's to get rid of these monkeys.

Isbahan Siraj Friday, 03 February 2017 08:15 AM

Doctors strike for school admission and vehicle permit as well before. If they strike again government should bring doctors from SAARC countries and teach them a good lesson. This medicine will be answered to our selfish doctors.

Money making Mongers. If it is the case and if they are so committed towards the patients why don't they work extra hours in government hospitals and treat them, they are scared that the Doctors passing out will bridge the gap of shortfall on doctors. If any shortcomings are at SAITM, point them out and uplift it. No one can deny the rights of innocent students who have achieved much more than the protesters in AL exams, unfortunatley due to the prevailing systems they can't enter our universities. Never give into the demand tomorrow they will demand all private institutions to closed down. This is cheap politics.

    Sarath Friday, 03 February 2017 07:36 AM

These GMOA fellows don't want more doctors cos they are scared of competition! Scared that students who have been studying ( instead of protesting like the thugs in the goverment university medical faculties) will be better than them

    Francis Friday, 03 February 2017 07:05 AM

HYPOCRISY at the highest level. They get free education and later penalize the poor patients. Cancel their rights to work as medical personnel. This is going too far. The present government is giving in too much to these people.

    Ragu Friday, 03 February 2017 06:55 AM

I've never seen such a bunch of cry babies .... first permit cars, then school admissions and now for SAITM.

Who has questioned which universities these GMOA members graduated from? Even abroad there are universities which are not well recognized. I think its time for the Government to go through the degrees these doctors have and publish the names of the universities they have obtained degrees so that the public can make an educated decision to consult these doctors or not.

Ungrateful GMOA members, they want Royal College admissions to their children who were not qualified for entry, they protest for every single thing. Its time Government of Sri Lanka gives work permits to foreign doctors to practice in Sri Lanka. May be start with SAARC country doctors.

    Nimal Friday, 03 February 2017 03:28 AM

PLEASE let us all respect the rule of law. If there was a genuine reason why didn't the GMOA prove it at the court hearing? Now please behave as descent citizens and educated professionals. Get real and get on with your jobs to serve the poor patients. Do not waste public money and time. Enough is enough! There must be a limit for all these unreasonable actions. Or else the general public will suffer and turn against the GMOA members for irresponsible behaviour. Surely the GMOA can't be that silly.

    sas Thursday, 02 February 2017 09:57 PM

GMOA why didn't you oppose medical school of the Kothalawala Defense university during the last regime?

Are you above the law as well

    Maithree Thursday, 02 February 2017 08:07 PM

If there is a violation of the law why doesn't these so called learned individuals of the GMOA take it to courts? Is it because they know that the judiciary was right and the ruling was legitimate? If it is as illegal as they claim surely they can challenge it.Why do they go to Trade Union Action instead? Is it to dangle the lives of innocent sick Sri Lankans over the judiciary and the government as a human ransom demand?Would the court simply change their credit because of a glorified trade union? This is akin to the LTTE holding innocent Tamils as human Shields at the end of the war!!!Shame!GMOA - should be called the Government Murdering Officers Association
