GMOA presents a national front against SAITM

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday said a national front would be launched with regard to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) in Malabe by making the political parties of the country aware of the matter.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge told a media briefing that they have discussed the matter with the Joint Opposition members including former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) during recent days.

“We have already written to President Maithripala Sirisena on the effects of the ruling directing the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to register SAITM's MBBS graduates. We have also written to the general secretaries of the SLFP and UNP on the matter,” he said.

He said the GMOA had conducted several discussions with state university students, parents and several unions including the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF).

He said the reason behind this open discussion of the matter was Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne’s irresponsible behaviour and his SAITM-biased stand; “Our aim is to create a strong force against the SAITM and secure the patients' lives as well as the medical field. We are taking every possible step to do so,” he added. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

First of all GMOA doctors should think they wanted to become doctors to serve the sick and suffering people regardless of whether they are rich, powerful or poor instead of behaving like third class thugs and using patients to satisfy their egotistic personalities. They should not forget the fact they were given free education by the people and they expect your dedication and compassion. Don't disgrace your profession.

Government should suggest GMOA members to work full time in Government Hospitals only but not in private practiceprivate university doctors not to practice in Government Hospitals but do only private hospitals.GMOA is to increase quality of Government Hospitals.We will choose the best service all the time. No need to worry too much

If GMOA is so genuine about State Medical education, they should demand from the government to prohibit Medical Consultant Doctors and other medical officers in state service to prohibit to engage in private practice or serve in private hospitals while drawing a salary from government.

They should first talk to their own members who lecture at the SAITM. A vociferous minority of the GMOA is becoming a law unto themselves and now trying to dictate to the rest of the country. This should not happen. It is time for the right thinking doctors to kick this lot out or form an alternate union.
