Highways and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kirella criticized the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) saying it had no right to interfere in Sri Lanka’s medical education.

He told Daily Mirror that the matter connected to the provisional registration of medical graduates, who passed out from SAITM would be addressed by the government in consultation with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

He said the GMOA was merely a trade union and had no right to interfere in this matter and neither was it a party to the Court case filed by the aggrieved parties.

The GMOA staged a token strike on Friday demanding the closure or nationalization of SAITM, the only private medical degree-awarding institution in Sri Lanka

However, GMOA Secretary Navin de Zoysa said the GMOA’s role, on similar matters had been recognized even in a previous court ruling and as such its involvement in the SAITM controversy could not be disputed.

He said the government should nationalise SAITM instead of bring the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital under the purview of the Health Ministry.

“In that case it will only be an additional cost for the government to maintain this hospital. SAITM authorities profit by conducting degree programmes unlawfully. The government is allowing SAITM to prosper further by taking over the hospital,” Dr. de Zoysa said. (Kelum Bandara)

All this is because Doctors think that they are special class of citizens in this country. I heard one person the other day saying that the Doctors think that they belong to Bamunu caste. Very true. After getting the free education to become a Doctor suddenly they become very aloof, and they are very jealous of others getting there. Jealous, wicked and selfish. Some people say that they think that they have come the ali............ .

The minimum qualification for student admission to a Private medical college should be gazetted. Who do not have the qualification should be removed from SAITM after giving compensation to them. The higher education ministry should be gazetted the minimum criteria are considered as minimum facilities in a private universities for all other degrees. All university academic staff at the lecturer or above rank should have a postgraduate degree. Give five years for all existing institutions to achieve these minimum facilities.

Enough is enough. These scum that forms the GMOA (just a trade union of so called 'doctors' ) should be dealt with. Final solution. Arrest and jail the ring leaders. Import qualified doctors (physicians and surgeons) from India and Pakistan with the following perks 1) Accommodation with tight security and transport. Revoke the licenses of the ring leaders. The others will automatically start shitting in their pants.

Yahapalanaya or not make the GMOA kingpin disappear and all will be well. Sometimes it's better to be unpopular to just a few selfish rabble and be the darlings of the rest of the population!!!

The press is also complicit in the present situation, since it also wants to make money. The GMOA should not be given a podium. The best would be not to publish any comments or illegal actions of this abstruse union.

Is it politicians who have the right to ruin this country?

    truth Monday, 10 April 2017 12:49 PM

Dear Dr. If the SAITM is taken over by the Govt it will be an additional burden to the Corporate TAX payers who are already looking after you and paying for the benefits you enjoy.Just to make it simple, Government collects TAX money from private sector corporates, individuals to meet your demands.

    Prabhath Monday, 10 April 2017 12:20 PM

It is time some public spirited person went to courts and took out an injunction against the GMOA strike. I think labour regulations define what kind of issues can lead to industrial action.

GMOA. Has to look after their related problems to take them up with the government to sort out .However they have no right to poke into the medical education of the country ipso facto they are in the profession at the expense of the patients and the people . If they have been honest ,they should have given aggressive agitation by giving crisis after crisis when MR was in power , they were then kept their tails between their hind legs ,now freely barking at the moon .

    cheers Monday, 10 April 2017 11:29 AM

So do you minister what right do you have to interfere or what qualification for that matter
